April 15 - Luke 17:11-37
Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. 13 And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” 14 So when He saw them, He said to them, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan. 17 So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? 18 Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.”

20 Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation; 21 nor will they say, ‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.” 22 Then He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 And they will say to you, ‘Look here!’ or ‘Look there!’ Do not go after them or follow them. 24 For as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven, so also the Son of Man will be in His day. 25 But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; 29 but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.

31 “In that day, he who is on the housetop, and his goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And likewise the one who is in the field, let him not turn back. 32 Remember Lot’s wife. 33 Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. 34 I tell you, in that night there will be two men in one bed: the one will be taken and the other will be left. 35 Two women will be grinding together: the one will be taken and the other left. 36 Two men will be in the field: the one will be taken and the other left.” 37 And they answered and said to Him, “Where, Lord?” So He said to them, “Wherever the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together.”

OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

In this portion of Scripture there are several things Jesus said that I will comment on.

The 10 lepers that Jesus cleansed. There was no known cure for leprosy. But Jesus brought healing to a group of 10 lepers by the power of God. However, only one of them returned to give glory, thanksgiving and praise to God. Anytime God does something for you always give Him thanksgiving, praise and glory. That's just a good habit for every Christian to practice as a lifestyle.

The Kingdom of God: Jesus was asked when the kingdom of God would come and He said it doesn't come with outward observation but that the kingdom of God is within you. This means that the kingdom or the rule or the dominion of God is first and foremost a matter of the heart and will. We can either choose to submit our lives to Jesus Christ as Lord or live in rebellion against God and His Word, morals and purpose for our lives. The Bible teaches that the kingdom of God has to do with our relationship with God first in righteousness which brings us peace and joy by yielding to the Holy Spirit.

Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 4:20 For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power.

First he says the kingdom of God is not in word. In other words if you speak Christian words and confess Jesus Christ without any evidence of Him being Lord of your life then there is no manifestation that God is the ruler of your life. This is why Paul said the kingdom of God is not in word but in power! What the apostle Paul means is evidence seen in the life of a believer that has been transformed from the inside out. It’s God’s power changing us from living for self and sin to living for God in righteousness by yielding to the power of the Holy Spirit. Remember the Holy Spirit will never lead us outside of what is written in the word of God but He will lead us to apply the word of God to our lives. This is the power of God at work in us and brings Him glory!

Right now in this age the kingdom of God is spiritual and within the hearts of believers by faith in Jesus Christ as Lord. However, there will come a day when Jesus Christ will return to establish the kingdom of God outwardly throughout the whole earth. Ref; Daniel 7:13-14.

Lot's wife: Jesus said; Remember Lot’s wife. Why? Because Lot, his wife and two daughters were delivered by the intervention of God through angels in response to the intercessory prayer of his uncle Abraham. The Angels warned them not to take anything from Sodom and Gomorrah and not to look back. However, Lot's wife looked back so she was turned into a pillar of salt! She came out of Sodom but Sodom did not come out of her! She came under the judgment of God and Jesus uses this to give us a strong warning. Once were saved we need to keep our eyes now on our Savior Jesus Christ and not turn back to living in the sin we were delivered from.

Remember, Jesus is talking about the end of the age just before His return and He describes how sinful, evil, ungodly and degenerate society will become. The Bible teaches us that after a person becomes a Christian they are to focus on the Lord Jesus Christ above:

Colossians 3:1-4 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

What an exciting promise! I think God wants us to enjoy life and the good things He provides for us. However, the Lord does not want His people to be caught up in the evil in this world so that they become entangled living in sinful ways because when Jesus comes He will come suddenly and there won't be any more time to get right with God. So don't look back to sin but look forward to the coming of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! You know, He promises that He will keep us from falling:

Jude 24-25 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever. Amen.

What’s the Bottom Line?

1. Live a lifestyle of giving thanksgiving, praise and glory to God for everything that He does for you because this pleases the Lord.

2. God's kingdom comes first on the inside through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ as Lord. Once a person is saved, they need to learn how to yield to the Holy Spirit Who will help produce righteousness, peace and joy in their lives in abundance!

3. Don't be like Lots wife. It's hard to drive a car in reverse looking through the rear-view mirror. As Christians we should be looking forward not backwards. Our eyes should be fixed on Jesus Christ our life and our hope!
