April 2 - Luke 9:51-10:12
Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem, 52 and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. 53 But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. 54 And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?” 55 But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. 56 For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village.

57 Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 59 Then He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.” 61 And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.” 62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Chapter 10
After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. 2 Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. 3 Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves. 4 Carry neither money bag, knapsack, nor sandals; and greet no one along the road. 5 But whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it; if not, it will return to you. 7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8 Whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. 9 And heal the sick there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whatever city you enter, and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘The very dust of your city which clings to us we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near you.’ 12 But I say to you that it will be more tolerable in that Day for Sodom than for that city.

OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

There were three individuals that Jesus spoke with about following him. We can learn a lot from how Jesus answered each of these individuals. Each of their circumstances were different but the one thing that is common is that Jesus made the work of the kingdom of God the priority for their lives.

The first man came to Jesus and said I will follow you wherever you go. Jesus said the foxes have holes and the birds have nests but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head. In other words, Jesus was telling the man I can't promise you anything so count the cost up front.

Jesus called the second man to follow him but he answered with an excuse saying “Lord, let me FIRST go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.” In other words, don't get caught up with trying to please everybody in your family because this can get you distracted. It's better for you that are alive spiritually to go and begin to preach that faith.

A third man came to Jesus and said Lord I'm going to follow you but FIRST let me go and say my goodbyes to my friends and family. Jesus discerned that this was going to be a negative experience and cause this man to turn back from following him. Many times family and friends will discourage those who feel a call from God to enter into the ministry.

This is why Jesus said no man having put his hand to the plow and turning back is fit for the kingdom of God. If you're going to plow a straight row, you have to keep your eyes focused ahead and not turn back. If you're going to follow Jesus Christ and do the will of God you have to be focused on him and not distracted by the opinions and discouragements of men who have no faith.

Jesus multiplied his ministry by training and sending 70 workers to preach the Word of God and do his works of healing and deliverance in the power of the Holy Spirit. There are many places that the Lord would like to go to today but he can only do it through you and me. This is why Jesus said the harvest is great for the workers are few pray that the Lord of the harvest would send workers into his harvest field. What's this mean? It means that as we pray we must remain open to be sent of the Lord as one of his workers wherever he wants us to go.

I have felt and responded to God’s specific calling several times in my life. I went on a short-term mission trip for ten days to Mexico. Next I spent two years of my life in the Dominican Republic as a missionary. The third trip was with my wife Yngris when we went to Southeast Asia and lived in Singapore for over three years doing missions, evangelism and church planting. I loved serving as an overseas missionary and continue to serve as a missionary in Metro Detroit as I write these words. Jesus said the field is the world! The rewards for this investment of time is eternal in terms of souls that were saved, lives restored and God being glorified!

WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?

1) God is still calling people today to follow him as his ambassadors.

2) Count the cost because the price may be high in worldly terms.

3) Be careful not to allow the opinions and discouragements of family and friends to turn you back from following the call of God in your life.

4) The harvest is still great and the need for Christian workers and missionaries are needed to get the job done.

5) Pray specifically for God to send workers into all the world and be willing to go yourself or help send others through your finances and prayers.

6) Any service we give to Christ now will be rewarded with eternal riches. It’s worth it to serve God and do whatever He calls you to do!
