April 20 - Luke 20:1-26
Now it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him 2 and spoke to Him, saying, "Tell us, by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?" 3 But He answered and said to them, "I also will ask you one thing, and answer Me: 4 The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men?" 5 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say, 'Why then did you not believe him?' 6 But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet." 7 So they answered that they did not know where it was from. 8 And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."
9 Then He began to tell the people this parable: "A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to vinedressers, and went into a far country for a long time. 10 Now at vintage-time he sent a servant to the vinedressers, that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 Again he sent another servant; and they beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.12 And again he sent a third; and they wounded him also and cast him out. 13 "Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Probably they will respect him when they see him.' 14 But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.' 15 So they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to others." And when they heard it they said, "Certainly not!" 17 Then He looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written: 'The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone'? 18 Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder." 19 And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people —for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.
20 So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the power and the authority of the governor. 21 Then they asked Him, saying, "Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth: 22 Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?" 23 But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, "Why do you test Me? 24 Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?" They answered and said, "Caesar's. 25 And He said to them, "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." 26 But they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at His answer and kept silent.
OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
Let's look at a parable that Jesus told the Jews that questioned His authority. It's commonly referred to as the parable of the "Wicked Vinedresser's." Jesus told the story to drive home the point that what the Jews had done throughout history by rejecting the prophets God sent to them they were now doing with Him.
• The owner of the vineyard refers to God.
• The servants that God sent to collect some of the fruit represent the prophets.
• The owner's son obviously represents Jesus and He was holding them accountable for their rejection of God's messengers.
The prophet Jeremiah also confronted the people of God with their stubborn refusal to listen and obey those that God sent to them. Jeremiah 7:24-26 Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but followed the counsels and the dictates of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward. 25 Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have even sent to you all My servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them. 26 Yet they did not obey Me or inclined their ear, but stiffened their neck. They did worse than their fathers.
Jesus concluded His parable by saying that the owner of the vineyard would come and destroy the wicked vinedresser's and give it to others that would provide Him the fruits of His vineyard. The Jews said God forbid! In other words, that's a horrible and atrocious thing that these wicked vinedressers did and they deserve to be judged! So once Jesus saw that He completely had their attention and they agreed that the vinedressers should be judged for their evil deeds He then applied the prophetic Scriptures written in Psalm 118 to them asking what then is this that is written? The stone that the builders rejected has become the head of the corner this is the Lord's doing and it is marvelous in our eyes. Whoever falls on this stone will be broken but on whomever this stone falls will be crushed to powder.
In other words, Jesus was saying you are fulfilling this prophecy by rejecting Me, the one God has sent to you. There are only two positions you can take concerning Me the Messiah. Accept and submit and be saved or reject and rebel and be destroyed. Ultimately, this is the choice that is put before every person today through the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ. God sends us His messengers, His ambassadors to tell the world about the love of God and grace of salvation offered to them through Jesus Christ. Those that receive Jesus Christ are broken, meaning that they repent and make Jesus Christ Lord of their lives and are saved. Those that reject Jesus Christ harden their hearts and if they do not repent will face certain destruction meaning they will be ground to powder when the rock of judgment falls on them.
WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?
1) The parable of the wicked vinedresser's obviously was applied to the Jews that had a
history of rejecting the prophets of God and ultimately the Son of God, Jesus Christ.
2) God is faithful to reach out to His people by sending messengers to turn them back to Him.
3) Preachers deliver the message of God. Don't shoot the messenger!
4) God has given the task of evangelizing the world to the Gentile Church (Isaiah 54)
5) Let's take the attitude of being servants understanding that God has called us to bring forth
the fruits of salvation to render to Him meaning influencing souls to Christ and developing His
character in believers by making disciples of all the nations.
