April 21 - Luke 20:27-47
Then some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, 28 saying: “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and died without children. 30 And the second took her as wife, and he died childless. 31 Then the third took her, and in like manner the seven also; and they left no children, and died. 32 Last of all the woman died also. 33 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all seven had her as wife.” 34 Jesus answered and said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37 But even Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised, when he called the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ 38 For He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for all live to Him.” 39 Then some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 But after that they dared not question Him anymore.
41 And He said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David? 42 Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, 43 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”’ 44 Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord’; how is He then his Son?” 45 Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to His disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, 47 who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”
OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
In this portion of Scripture we get a rare glimpse into the relationships we will have in Heaven and in the age to come. The answer Jesus gave the Sadducees to their question gives us an understanding about how life will be after the resurrection. Jesus explained, that in this age people marry which is normal and have a family. However, after the resurrection, it appears that our bodies will be glorified and become like the angels of God which means of course our bodies will be eternal. Additionally, Jesus said that after the resurrection the marriage relationship will no longer be happening. In that future age, people will no longer be getting married or living in that kind of marriage relationship but again will be like angels of God being sons of the resurrection.
One thing I would point out that seems to agree with the idea of all of us being recognized as sons of God after the resurrection is that Jesus said we would be equal to the angels. I can't recall ever reading in the Scriptures anywhere about a female angel. It seems that all the angels that are recorded in the Scriptures have been masculine like Gabriel and Michael.
Does this mean that human beings after the resurrection will no longer be recognized by gender? This is a very interesting question and I’m not sure that I can answer this accurately. I can't imagine not being able to recognize people according to gender but then again as the apostle Paul said right now we see through a glass darkly but then face-to-face. In other words, we kind of understand how things will be in eternal life but once we get there all our questions will be answered because we will understand everything perfectly.
WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?
1. According to Jesus there is life after death!
2. People are recognized in Heaven according to who they were in the earth just like Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
3. What’s most important is not whether gender will be recognized but that we make it to Heaven where we will spend an eternity together with our Father, Jesus the Holy Spirit and all the family of God, including our saved loved ones.
4. Let’s share our hope of eternal life and salvation through the grace of God by faith in Jesus Christ with those around us and influence others to Christ.
