April 24 - Luke 22:14-34
When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. 21 But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table. 22 And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” 23 Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.
24 Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. 25 And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ 26 But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. 27 For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves. 28 “But you are those who have continued with Me in My trials. 29 And I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me, 30 that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” 31 And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.” 33 But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.” 34 Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”
OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
We have to break apart what Jesus said to Peter because we all can identify with Peter. Sometimes we feel strong in our faith while other times we seem to deny that we know Jesus by either our lifestyles or our silence when we should speak up as a witness for our Savior. Other times we wonder if the Lord could ever forgive us and really use us in the ministry either serving in the Church or even full time. The longer I’m a Christian the more I realize I need God’s grace and power every moment of every day because there is a human flesh side to me that needs divine help. As I look as the events around this discussion between Jesus and Peter I see four points in a timeline:
The Warning of Jesus to Peter – Jesus warned Peter that Satan had asked to sift him like wheat. This is very interesting indeed. It's obvious, Satan can't just destroy our lives at random. No, it seems that Satan had to go through Jesus before he could touch Peter. The wonderful thing about it is that Jesus said that he prayed for Peter that his faith would not fail. That's very comforting to me to know that Jesus Christ is protecting me and that He also is praying for me. We find this also in the prayer of Jesus for his disciples in John 17:9 “I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours.
The Denial of Peter – Peter boasted that he would never deny the Lord and that he was ready to go to both prison and death with Jesus Christ. However, this was based on pure ego and emotion which carried no strength with it. We know this because less than 12 hours later, Peter denied knowing Jesus three times. Some of us, like Peter, can boast of what we would do being surrounded by temptation, persecuted or facing death for our faith but when the pressure is on what is on the inside comes out. You may be surprised how weak you really are under pressure.
The Restoration of Peter – The Bible says that after Peter denied knowing Jesus three times he went out and wept bitterly. Peter was broken. His pride was shattered. Jesus had called Peter and trusted him as one of his closest friends and leaders but after over three years of walking with Jesus, experiencing the supernatural power of God daily, Peter denied that he even knew Him. This did not take Jesus by surprise. No, the Lord saw this weakness in Peter and told him about it, prayed for him and never stopped believing in him. Jesus showed this kind of unconditional love for Peter when they met on the beach after Jesus resurrection. Jesus asked Peter if he loved him and Peter answered “Yes Lord you know I love you.” three times the same number of times Peter denied knowing Jesus. Jesus then added “Feed My Sheep.” This meant that Jesus was restoring Peter both personally in his relationship with Himself but also to the ministry God had called him to. No matter how bad we mess up, backslide, do stupid things the Lord never stops loving us and will always restore us if simply say “Yes” to Jesus love and purpose for us!
The Ministry of Peter – This is really exciting! After Peter was restored to Jesus personally he was baptized in the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. Now he boldly preached Jesus Christ and over 3000 people became believers and were baptized in water and added to the Church! This is what Jesus told Peter to do after he was restored “Strengthen you brothers.” Peter continued preaching and God used him mightily to encourage and teach multitudes about Jesus Christ. Peter wrote two books of the New Testament called First and Second Peter that have been a constant source of faith, encouragement and hope to all that read them. You see, the Holy Spirit used all that Peter went through to encourage others. This is one of the wonderful things about the Lord, nothing is wasted in our lives. Why? Because the Lord will use even our weaknesses and temporary failures to encourage and lift others faith when they hear how the Lord has had patience with us and the evident grace of God to restore and use us in the ministry even after we’ve blown it big time!
WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?
1. Peter is an example of how the Lord never gives up on us even if we fall.
2. Satan want’s to destroy every Christian but Jesus protects us and prays for us!
3. You really do not know how strong you are until you’re under pressure.
4. The Lord always wants to restore us in our relationship with Him and the ministry that He has called us to.
5. When you fall, don’t run from God run to Him because He never stops loving us.
