April 25 - Luke 22:35-53
And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?” So they said, “Nothing.” 36 Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. 37 For I say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.” 38 So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords." And He said to them, “It is enough.”

39 Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. 40 When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 41 And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45 When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. 46 Then He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.”

47 And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”

OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

The only place in the whole Bible where this word agony is used is found in this portion of Scripture. 44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

The blue letter Bible gives this definition to this word agony:
1) a struggle for victory a) gymnastic exercise, wrestling
2) of severe mental struggles and emotions, agony, anguish

Okay let's get real about all this. I mean think about it, if you are about to be crucified with 12 inch spikes being driven through your hands and feet knowing that you are going to suffer physically and be tortured you also would be in agony!!! However Jesus agony was more than the thought of physical suffering it also included taking upon him the sins of the world and being completely rejected by his heavenly father and separated from him on the cross. This is something that is very difficult for any of us to understand. Why? Because Jesus Christ was the Son of God and he had never been separated from his heavenly father from eternity past until the present and had enjoyed unbroken fellowship with His father. Jesus knew that in just a little while he was going to experience a blackness of soul and emptiness that he had never known before being separated from his father God for the sins of the world. This is exactly what happened. Later in Luke's gospel the Bible teaches us that between the 6th hour until the 9th hour, darkness came over the face of the whole earth and Jesus cried out on the cross “My God my God why have you forsaken me?”

For three hours on the cross, Jesus Christ was separated from his father God spiritually as he suffered as a sacrifice for all of our sins as the Bible teaches us in 2 Corinthians 5:21 that “He (God) has made him (Jesus) to be sin for us who knew no sin that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” The heavenly father God turned his face away from his Son as he hung on the cross and took upon him the punishment for all of our sins though he had no sin of his own to be punished for he suffered gruesomely being tortured and fully paid the price for all of our sins with his own blood. To him be eternal praise and glory!

WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?

1. The sufferings of Jesus were unique because he suffered on 3 levels physically, emotionally and spiritually.

2. The intensity of his sufferings and agony are seen in that his sweat became as drops of blood as he prayed.

3. Jesus yielded to the will of God his father and became our salvation as he paid the price for all of our sins on the cross.

4. As the definition for this word agony says it was a battle that Jesus fought and thank God he won so that all of us could be saved. Why? Because only Jesus Christ was qualified to be the Savior of the world. He had no sin of his own but paid the price for all of our sins which provides us eternal life and righteousness before God through faith in him alone.

5. Whenever you're having a bad day try to remember the day that Jesus had in agony suffering for our sins and our circumstances suddenly don't seem so bad. Remember to pray as Jesus prayed and you will find strength from above to do the will of God.
