April 3 - Luke 10:13-37
“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades. 16 He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” 17 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” 18 And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”

21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. 22 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.” 23 Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see; 24 for I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it.”

25 And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?” 27 So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’” 28 And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” 29 But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ 36 So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” 37 And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

Who is your neighbor?

This is what a self-righteous lawyer asked Jesus because he wanted to justify himself for his lack of compassion on the less fortunate and poor around him.

Jesus answered his question by telling a story. It's commonly known as the story of the “Good Samaritan.”

Let me break it down in terms that we can apply to our modern day world. There are people all around us like the man that fell among thieves. Life has dealt them a losing hand. They have been kicked to the curve and are suffering.

The priest comes along and does nothing. This could represent a Christian pastor today.

The Levi comes along and also does nothing. This could represent a Christian deacon today.

But along comes a Samaritan. You have to understand that the Samaritans were worshipers of false gods. Jesus said that the Samaritan, when he saw the man on the side of the road had compassion on him!

What did he do? He bandaged up the wounds that he received from the thieves pouring in oil and wine to stop infection and he put him on his donkey and took him to an inn. The Bible says he took care of the man that night and in the morning he left him in the care of the Innkeeper and gave him some money saying when I come back through I will pay you anything else that it is cost to take care of this suffering man.

What would be the equivalent of this today?

It would be finding any person that is suffering and having compassion on them and spending some personal time using your resources to help them get on their feet both naturally and spiritually.

Naturally, it may be that we help them pay their rent or buy them groceries or get them to resources to help them. Spiritually, it’s leading people that are suffering to a good local church and connecting them with a true pastor so they can receive spiritual and emotional restoration in their lives.

Remember, local churches should be like hospitals. There are plenty of people all around us that are like sheep without a shepherd. If we get them to a healthy local church and introduce them to the pastor and other Christians they can be restored spiritually through the love and Word of God and the Holy Spirit. A church should be a place where people find that they are welcomed, loved and encouraged to believe in a bright future through faith in God.

After telling the story Jesus asked the lawyer which of the three was neighbor to him who fell among thieves? The lawyer answered and said the one that showed compassion on him. Jesus said go and do likewise!

WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?

1) Do you have compassion on the suffering around you?

2) What is your attitude towards those that are less fortunate, poor and hurting?

3) If you really want to be someone that loves their neighbor and fulfill the second most important law in the whole Bible learn to show compassion and take action to help someone that's hurting.
