April 30 - John 1:1-28
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’” 16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him. 19 Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 Then they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said: “I am ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Make straight the way of the Lord,”’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” 24 Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees. 25 And they asked him, saying, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know. 27 It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.” 28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

The Gospel of John is the latest of the four Gospels written by the apostle John. The content is unique in several ways which I'm excited to explore with you. John was probably the closest personal friend of Jesus Christ. John knew Jesus better than most people. John was selected by Jesus to be one of twelve men to be trained for the ministry. Jesus called these men “apostles” meaning “sent ones”.

Of the twelve apostles, Jesus had an inner circle of three; Peter, James and John that he met with on special occasions. Jesus took them with Him up the mountain and was transfigured before their eyes. When Jesus said that one of the apostles would betray him John was actually leaning on Jesus chest. He could hear the heartbeat of the Son of God! John asked Jesus who was it? In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus was with the eleven apostles but he took Peter, James and John with Him to go and pray. When Jesus was on the cross he entrusted the care of his mother Mary to his best friend John. The Bible says from that time on John took care of Mary. Now that's about as high of level of trust you can have placing your mothers well-being to a friend to take care of. The point is, John knew Jesus extremely well.

However, even though John knew Jesus up close and personal as he walked with him on earth he came to know Him even better through the revelation of the Holy Spirit after Jesus resurrection from the dead.  John was given the revelation of Jesus being the Word that existed with the Father from eternity past and manifested as a man on earth. John writes that Jesus came to show us what it was like to be the Son of God and to restore every person into that same relationship that he has with his father through a spiritual rebirth by believing and receiving Jesus Christ as our Savior. So John writes with unique emphasis about being born again into the family of God!

Verses 1:11-14 in the Amplified reveals this powerfully:

11 He came to that which belonged to Him [to His own—His domain, creation, things, world], and they who were His own did not receive Him and did not welcome Him.

12 But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the authority (power, privilege, right) to become the children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name--

13 Who owe their birth neither to bloods nor to the will of the flesh [that of physical impulse] nor to the will of man [that of a natural father], but to God. [They are born of God!]

14 And the Word (Christ) became flesh (human, incarnate) and tabernacled (fixed His tent of flesh, lived awhile) among us; and we [actually] saw His glory (His honor, His majesty), such glory as an only begotten son receives from his father, full of grace (favor, loving-kindness) and truth.

What’s the Bottom Line?

1. Of all the apostles John was the closest personal friend of Jesus Christ.

2. John writes his gospel after Matthew, Mark and Luke record their Gospels.

3. The emphasis of John's Gospel is revealing Jesus Christ as the Son of God.

4. The proof of Jesus being the son of God are the miracles recorded in John's Gospel.

5. The purpose of John's Gospel is to bring people to faith and a new spiritual rebirth through Jesus Christ to become children of God.
