April 8 - Luke 12:35-59
“Let your waist be girded and your lamps burning; 36 and you yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately. 37 Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly, I say to you that he will gird himself and have them sit down to eat, and will come and serve them. 38 And if he should come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. 39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 40 Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” 41 Then Peter said to Him, “Lord, do You speak this parable only to us, or to all people?”
42 And the Lord said, “Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season? 43 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 44 Truly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all that he has. 45 But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and be drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. 47 And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48 But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.
49 “I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is accomplished! 51 Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, but rather division. 52 For from now on five in one house will be divided: three against two, and two against three. 53 Father will be divided against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.” 54 Then He also said to the multitudes, “Whenever you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it is. 55 And when you see the south wind blow, you say, ‘There will be hot weather’; and there is. 56 Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it you do not discern this time? 57 “Yes, and why, even of yourselves, do you not judge what is right? 58 When you go with your adversary to the magistrate, make every effort along the way to settle with him, lest he drag you to the judge, the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59 I tell you, you shall not depart from there till you have paid the very last mite.”
OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
In this passage of Scripture Jesus teaches on his second coming and about the final judgment that we will all face as His servants. I want to zero in on the parable that Jesus taught about the two servants. Remember, Peter asked Jesus to clarify who the parable was directed to. Was it for everyone or just his disciples? Jesus answered Peter's question by telling a story of two servants. All Christians are servants of the Lord however some are faithful, sincere and true while others backslide and forsake the Lord. Jesus asks a question who then is a wise and faithful servant whom his master will appoint ruler over his house to give them their portion of food in due season? Jesus says that servant is a blessed if he is found faithfully discharging the duties of his ministry. In verse 42 Jesus uses the word “steward”
The blue letter Bible defines Steward Strong's G3623 - oikonomos 1) the manager of household or of household affairs 2) metaph. the apostles and other Christian teachers and bishops and overseers.
The context is obvious. Jesus is talking about the leaders that He has placed in charge of his church to minister and feed his people. In other words, the pastors but really the parable can be applied to every Christian. What was the main point? The wise and faithful pastor understood that he had been given a responsibility as an under shepherd of Jesus Christ to care for his people. He knew that he would receive his reward from the Lord so he fulfilled his ministry faithfully. The Lord said that when He returned this faithful servant would be blessed and promoted in the future kingdom of God. Remember what Jesus asked Peter after Peter had denied him three times? Jesus ask, Peter, do you love me? Jesus said if you love me feed my sheep. In other words Peter you're not only restored to Me but also to your ministry just keep at it faithfully because I called you to do this. The Lord is merciful and patient with all of us because each of us falls and makes mistakes as we walk with God.
Then Jesus went on to talk about a servant that said in his heart my Lord is delaying his coming. In other words, this servant lost sight that his Lord could return at any moment and require an accounting of his life and ministry. This servant was also in a position of authority in the house of God but he abused his power by mistreating his fellow servants, those that were under his care. Jesus also said, that this servant compromised Gods moral and righteous standards by living to fulfill the lusts of his flesh and became intoxicated with alcohol. The servant may have started out well with good intentions to serve the Lord but somewhere along the way he got his eyes off from Jesus and began to live a sinful lifestyle. Jesus said that the master of the servant would come at an hour and time that he was not expecting and instead of bringing salvation he would bring judgment.
The picture Jesus paints here is really graphic! He says the judgment that the master brought on the wicked servant was that he pulled out his sword and cut him in half. I believe Jesus was teaching that God sees what's going on in people's hearts and lives and if they don't repent of their sins they can only expect judgment from God. Being cut in half by a sword represents the outward manifestation of the inward condition of the wicked servant who lived a double life in sin and hypocrisy. This is exactly what Jesus said would be the end result of the wicked servant. Verse 46 says… cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
There are all kinds of positions today on eternal security and some teach that a Christian can never lose their salvation under any circumstances. What I would say is don't listen to what other people teach if it doesn't line up with the Word of God. To me, the parable that Jesus taught is very straightforward and easy to understand. If we live for God and are faithful to Him we will be rewarded for our righteous life and our work. Don't misunderstand me here, we're saved by grace through faith not our works but if a person is really saved their lifestyle will show it by becoming more and more like Jesus Christ in godliness.
However, if we decide that we can live our Christian life in sin and make those choices to live a sinful lifestyle and begin to abuse other people, I think Jesus explains what will end up happening to those wicked servants. Furthermore, some teach Christians can live in sin and be saved and go to heaven. Don't deceive yourselves! I don't care what label you put on yourself if you decide to live an immoral lifestyle breaking the commands of God and you die in your sins there's a good chance according to what Jesus taught that you won't be going to heaven but to hell. Just to set the record straight on where I stand, I want to quote what Jesus Christ said in the book of Revelation 22:14-15 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. 15 But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.
Now that’s very clear to me. Ultimately, there will only be two groups recognized by God at the final judgment, those that are saved and those that are lost. Jesus says one group gets to go inside the eternal city and enjoy the presence of God and His blessings forever! Another group will remain outside including dogs, sorcerers, sexually immoral, murderers, idolaters and whoever loves and practices a lie or in other words those that break the moral commands of God, live in sin and those that live a lie or a double lifestyle of hypocrisy. Teaching that you can live in sin but be a Christian is really Satanic and is twisting the word of God just like the Devil did in the garden when he told Adam and Eve they could eat the forbidden fruit and not die.
Another verse of Scripture that has influenced my life greatly is Luke 12:47. And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. Here Jesus teaches that if we know God's will yet we do not prepare ourselves and do his will or His plan for our lives we will face judgment for this.
On the other hand, you can look at this verse of Scripture positively. We can know God's will through His Word the Bible. The Lord is faithful to communicate to us what he has called us to do. The Lord says we need to prepare ourselves to fulfill God's plan for our lives. For some this may mean as it did for myself going to Bible school because I knew God was calling me to be a preacher. I had a great desire to preach and teach the Word of God. After preparing myself spiritually I threw myself into the ministry to do the will of God for my life as a missionary and teacher of the Word of God. I can tell you there's no greater joy than knowing that you're in the middle of God's will for your life!
WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?
1) The Lord Jesus Christ will come back and we need to live ready to meet Him
2) Make a choice to be a good and faithful servant doing whatever God has called you to do
3) Don't twist the Bible and teach people can live in sin as Christians and go to Heaven
4) If you sin repent and receive God's cleansing and forgiveness according to 1 John 1:9
5) Make doing God's will and fulfilling His purpose for your life your highest priority
6) God loves you and there will be a great reward waiting for his faithful servants
7) Finally, children of God should not have an unhealthy fear of God because He is their father and His love is the basis of our relationship with Him. The Bible says 1 John 4:17-19
Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 19 We love Him because He first loved us.
“Let your waist be girded and your lamps burning; 36 and you yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately. 37 Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching.
