August 10 – 1 Corinthians 6:1-20
Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unrighteous, and not before the saints? 2 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? 3 Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life? 4 If then you have judgments concerning things pertaining to this life, do you appoint those who are least esteemed by the church to judge? 5 I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you, not even one, who will be able to judge between his brethren? 6 But brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers! 7 Now therefore, it is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against one another. Why do you not rather accept wrong? Why do you not rather let yourselves be cheated? 8 No, you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and you do these things to your brethren! 9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
12 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 13 Foods for the stomach and the stomach for foods, but God will destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 And God both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.”17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
OKAY, HERE’S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
In this section of his letter Paul deals with believers suing each other and going to the legal system of the world for judgment. It seems that one of the members had taken advantage of another to their financial hurt. The other was so upset that they decided to sue for compensation looking to the courts to arbitrate based on the laws of the land. Paul wrote that they should work out their problems with the help of other believers judging the case to bring a just resolution. Does this mean Christians can never use the legal system to defend themselves? No, not necessarily. Let me explain my position.
First, what Paul was writing was not a commandment from God but rather a preferred way of dealing with conflicts that have to do with fellow believers doing something to either take financial advantage or do some kind of personal injury or wrong of their brothers or sisters in Christ. Second, he was writing to individuals that were part of the same local church. They fellowshipped, worshipped and served the Lord together in the same church. Getting their disputes resolved within the church community would positively affect their unity and witness before unbelievers in the world. Remember, Christianity was a totally new movement just breaking into the Gentile world. Paul was concerned about how these hostile people suing each other would affect the church and their witness in that city. I mean, think of Paul’s view of this. He had labored and planted this church and now the members were suing each other. Rumors of how these “Christians” treat each other would spread through the community and give a bad impression to everyone about the Christ followers. For these reasons he was writing to work out their problems in house before going to court.
While it would be great to be able to reconcile and resolve issues peacefully among Christians simply by submitting arguments to a panel of non-biased, wise, neutral Christians it’s just not practical nowadays. First, both parties would need to voluntarily agree to accept the decision of the appointed in-house judges. This said, I agree that as Paul was advocating, Christians should make every attempt to work out issues of offense with others before going to the legal route! This is the spirit of Jesus teaching as well: Matthew 5:38-40 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also.”
It’s in this very context of dealing the sin or incest in chapter five and now the sins of cheating and doing wrong to others that Paul gives us a very serious warning not to be deceived about living in sin, that the unrighteous will not inherit the Kingdom of God. In verses 9-10 he identifies ten sins that will keep people out of Heaven. So, if you confess to be a Christian make sure that you don’t become self-deceived about sinful living because even as Jesus taught there will be many on the day of judgement that are not going to like what they hear from the Lord.
Matthew 7:23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
Matthew 25:46 And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Finally, Paul emphasizes that our bodies are not for sexual immorality but for the Lord and the Lord for our bodies. When we realize our divine purpose of having God live inside of us by His Holy Spirit we commit to live in such a way that glorifies God, seeing he has purchased our salvation with his own blood on the cross. Don’t give into a diluted gospel of powerless grace that says you can just live anyway you want to as a Christian and make it to Heaven! No my friend we have to learn to treat others with love and respect and live the kind of life that pleases God. Jesus didn’t call the Christian life straight and narrow for nothing. Go all the way with Jesus and live to glorify God in all you do and you will be blessed.
WHAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE?
1) Sometimes Christians have conflicts and issues with their fellow Christians.
2) It’s always best to try and reconcile and resolve differences peacefully without resorting to lawsuits.
3) The main reason Paul did not want these believers to go to court was not to be a bad witness of what it means to be a follower of Christ.
4) Paul mentions 10 sins that will keep people out of the Kingdom of God.
5) Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.
6) Christians have been purchased through the blood of Jesus Christ and belong to God therefore we should glorify him in the way we live and treat one another.
