August 11 – 1 Corinthians 7:1-24
Now concerning the things of which you wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. 2 Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. 3 Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5 Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 6 But I say this as a concession, not as a commandment. 7 For I wish that all men were even as I myself. But each one has his own gift from God, one in this manner and another in that. 8 But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for them if they remain even as I am; 9 but if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
10 Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband. 11 But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife. 12 But to the rest I, not the Lord, say: If any brother has a wife who does not believe, and she is willing to live with him, let him not divorce her. 13 And a woman who has a husband who does not believe, if he is willing to live with her, let her not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy. 15 But if the unbeliever departs, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace. 16 For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?
17 But as God has distributed to each one, as the Lord has called each one, so let him walk. And so I ordain in all the churches. 18 Was anyone called while circumcised? Let him not become uncircumcised. Was anyone called while uncircumcised? Let him not be circumcised. 19 Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing, but keeping the commandments of God is what matters. 20 Let each one remain in the same calling in which he was called. 21 Were you called while a slave? Do not be concerned about it; but if you can be made free, rather use it.22 For he who is called in the Lord while a slave is the Lord’s freedman. Likewise he who is called while free is Christ’s slave. 23 You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men. 24 Brethren, let each one remain with God in that state in which he was called.
OKAY, HERE’S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
The Believers at Corinth sent Paul specific questions regarding relationships. Now that they were Christians how did God expect them to act concerning marriage? Paul answers by clarifying what God commands but also gives his own personal views. He tells them in order to avoid sexual immorality everyone should marry and have their own husband or wife. This reveals that God created marriage not only for procreation but also for sexual satisfaction. Taking care of your spouse sexually is expected except with the understanding that one wants to spend some time in fasting and prayer. Sexual satisfaction in the Christian marriage is very important because according to God there is only one person that can meet that sexual need and that is your spouse.
Some Christians may have had the idea that abstaining from sex would make them more spiritual but that is simply a lie from the devil. No, God created the man and woman in the marriage covenant relationship to fully satisfy each other and no one else. Remember sex before marriage is called fornication and sex outside of the marriage covenant relationship is called adultery. Both are sins that are listed several places in the Bible that condemn people to hell. So you can see how important having the right view of sex within the Christian marriage is. There is so much more I could say about Christian marriage. My wife Yngris and I taught a course called the UN-BREAKABLE MARRIAGE which is available to you free as an online course through our school, Diamond Institute. We share 12 topics concerning marriage which we are sure will be a blessing to you! Just enroll for free and you will get access to this teaching. http://www.diamondinstitute.org/enroll
About the issue of divorce Paul first points out the command of God not to divorce also, Christians should not divorce their unbelieving spouse. It truly can be a great challenge to live with someone that does not have the same spiritual values and experiences that you have. When a person receives Christ they’re changed and have a desire to spend time with God, go to church and stop living in sin. Paul encourages believers to have patience with their unbelieving spouses because the Lord may use them to lead them to faith in Christ.
Peter also wrote something along the same lines because apparently there were many within the early Christian community struggling with the same issues. Peter says that believing wives should win they’re unbelieving husbands without the word. 1 Peter 3:1-2 Wives, fit in with your husbands’ plans; for then if they refuse to listen when you talk to them about the Lord, they will be won by your respectful, pure behavior. Your godly lives will speak to them better than any words. (The Living Bible). So the thought is for believers definitely not to divorce their unbelieving spouses but try to win them to the Lord by the change they see you in your life so much that they would desire the Christ they see in you.
WHAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE?
1) God made man and woman with the idea that they would be one flesh.
2) Sex is given to us by our Creator as a gift for both procreation and the satisfaction of our sexual desires within the context of the covenant of marriage between one man and one woman.
3) You’re not more spiritual if you abstain from having sex and may be deceived by the devil into thinking you are somehow closer to God by not having sex with your spouse.
4) The only time that we should pause from our marriage sexual relationship is to fast and pray but then come back together again and not be tempted.
5) Remember that sex before marriage is called fornication and sex outside of the marriage covenant is adultery and both are condemned as sins.
6) If you are a Christian and your spouse is not pray and ask God to help you to live the kind of life before them that causes them to desire the Christ that is inside you and get saved.
