August 3 ~ Romans 16:10-27
Greet Apelles, approved in Christ. Greet those who are of the household of Aristobulus. 11 Greet Herodion, my countryman. Greet those who are of the household of Narcissus who are in the Lord. 12 Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, who have labored in the Lord. Greet the beloved Persis, who labored much in the Lord. 13 Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother and mine. 14 Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermas, Patrobas, Hermes, and the brethren who are with them. 15 Greet Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints who are with them. 16 Greet one another with a holy kiss. The churches of Christ greet you.

17 Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. 18 For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple. 19 For your obedience has become known to all. Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil. 20 And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

21
Timothy, my fellow worker, and Lucius, Jason, and Sosipater, my countrymen, greet you. 22 I, Tertius, who wrote this epistle, greet you in the Lord. 23 Gaius, my host and the host of the whole church, greets you. Erastus, the treasurer of the city, greets you, and Quartus, a brother. 24 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. 25 Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret since the world began 26 but now made manifest, and by the prophetic Scriptures made known to all nations, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, for obedience to the faith— 27 to God, alone wise, be glory through Jesus Christ forever. Amen.

OKAY, HERE’S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

Notice the extensive network of people that the apostle Paul recognizes by name. These believers at Rome were his family, fellow workers and acquaintances. Why is this so vital? Because church planting is all about relationships! First, it's about a vertical relationship with God the father through his son Jesus Christ but then planting churches becomes a gigantic team effort and this is the horizontal relationships that leaders must develop and value the people that God connects them with to bring out the best of each one helping them to become part of a dream team to fulfill God’s vision for their city! All church planters and pastors would do well to spend quality time with people and develop relationships because those relationships become the glue to connecting people to God and his purposes. The apostle Paul was obviously a total extrovert and loved spending time with people talking and getting to know them then praying for their needs and sharing his testimony to win them to Christ.

He tells us to do something very interesting in verse 17 and that is to “mark” people that cause divisions and offenses that are contrary to the basic gospel of Jesus Christ.  People that try to split churches and divide believers are motivated by Satan because Jesus said any house divided against itself cannot stand. This is also why Paul also said that because of their obedience God would crush Satan under their feet shortly but what does this mean?  We know that this is a figure of speech and not something literal. It means that the work of Satan against these Christians in Rome would be defeated by their unity and love. Where Christians stand together unified around the gospel of Jesus Christ and committed to walk in love with one another the devil will be defeated! Satan knows that there is great power in the unity of the church and therefore he attacks believers and churches to try to divide and conquer. Don’t let the evil one do it at your church! Forgive and love everyone and learn to pray much for your pastor, leaders and all your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ no matter how un-Christian they may act.

Paul summarizes his letter to the Romans saying that God is able to establish them according to the preaching of Jesus Christ making them strong in their faith. This was Paul’s original purpose for writing his letter to the Romans and what he desired to see happen when he came and visited them personally was to preach and teach the word of God to build up their faith. Romans 1:11-12 For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established— 12 that is, that I may be encouraged together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.

He says that their faith is based on the revelation of the prophetic word of God, the Old Testament Scriptures which reveal Jesus Christ as the promised Messiah, the only Savior of all men. You can almost hear the great commission that Jesus gave in Luke chapter 24 echoed here as the Holy Spirit spoke through Paul because he writes that this is God's command to preach the gospel to all nations and reveal by the Holy Scriptures the Son of the living God, our Lord Jesus Christ.

WHAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE?

1) If you are called to plant a church or pastor a church then be sure to be friendly and build a network of people that are excited about the vision of winning your city to Jesus Christ.

2) Don’t allow people to preach in your church that bring division and false teaching.

3) Remember that Satan is defeated through our love and unity!

4) Always seek to be a part of the solution and build people up in their faith never tear people down through criticism.

5) The Old Testament prophecies are the prophetic scriptures that point us to Jesus Christ and the New Testament Scriptures reveal the fact that Jesus Christ is the son of the living God the savior of the world.
