February 10 Matthew 26:47-68
And while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him.” 49 Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 50 But Jesus said to him, “Friend, why have you come?” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him. 51 And suddenly, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. 52 But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?” 55 In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me. 56 But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.
57 And those who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. 58 But Peter followed Him at a distance to the high priest’s courtyard. And he went in and sat with the servants to see the end. 59 Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, 60 but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward 61 and said, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.’”
62 And the high priest arose and said to Him, “Do you answer nothing? God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!” 63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, “I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!” 64 Jesus said to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy! 66 What do you think?” They answered and said, “He is deserving of death.” 67 Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?”
OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
Jesus was in control of His destiny
Jesus laid down his life willingly according to the plan of God declared through the prophets. Jesus didn't have to die on the cross for our sins. It was really his own choice to be our substitute to take our place to pay the price for each of us with his own death on the cross. He told his disciples, if I want out of this all I have to do is pray and my Father will send 12 legions of angels and rescue me. This would not be happening because Jesus had already made a decision to do the will of the Father and the will of the Father was to manifest his love for all of humanity by making away to justify them from their guilt and condemnation by Jesus receiving the punishment for all of our sins and so provide cleansing and salvation to every person through His holy blood.
Jesus confession before the High Priest
Jesus never answered any of the false accusations that they brought against him. The high priest put Jesus under oath that he would tell the truth before the living God if He was the Christ the Son of God. Jesus answered the charge directly with “It is as you say” confirming that he was the Christ, the Son of God. It's very interesting what Jesus says next: “Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
Why did Jesus say this?
Because He was focused not on the suffering He was about to endure but on the goal of redeeming humanity and reclaiming the original authority that God gave to Adam. Jesus identified Himself as both the Son of God and “the Son of Man.” You see, Adam lost his spiritual authority because of his sin but because Jesus had no sin and had resisted Satan's temptations he was now in a position as the “Second Adam” to regain what Adam lost. In just a little while, Jesus would be restored to his place in Heaven at His Father's right side but not just as Jesus the Son of God but as Jesus the son of man with the legal right to re-enter and reclaim planet Earth at will. Jesus was 100% God and 100% man.
We can find a prophecy of this foretold in Daniel 7:13-14 “I was watching in the night visions, and behold, One like the Son of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought Him near before Him. Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom the one which shall not be destroyed.”
So Jesus looked right past the cross to regaining the crown that Adam had lost! The writer of Hebrews also makes reference to this in Hebrews 12:2 “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Jesus manifested the authority and power of the kingdom of God by casting out devils, healing the sick and preaching the Word of God. After Jesus arose from the dead and appeared to his disciples He imparted to them the regained authority that Adam lost but that now he had recaptured as both the Son of God and the Son of Man. This is why Jesus said what he said in the Great Commission of Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Jesus said all authority has been given to me both in Heaven and on Earth. In other words, Jesus was saying to His disciples – My Father and all of Heaven has just accepted my blood to cleanse humanity of all their sins and He has given to Me the authority that Adam lost and now I give it back to you my disciples. So, go tell the world who has all the power and authority now, Me, Jesus Christ! Jesus promised in His Great Commission written in the gospel of Mark 16 that healing, deliverance from demonic powers and miraculous signs would follow believers because the Lord Jesus Christ Himself would work with those that go preaching the gospel and confirm their word with signs following revealing to people of all nations that Jesus Christ is the only One that has spiritual authority and power to forgive their sins, heal their bodies, and save their souls, Jesus Christ. Jesus promises that his divine presence will be with us always and then he puts an emphasis on “even until the end of the age.”
WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?
Let's follow the example of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and boldly confess him before men. Let that be our crime, let confessing His name be our accusation identifying with Jesus Christ as the Son of God the Savior of the world by lifting up his name everywhere!
Also, let's look beyond any temporary suffering that we are dealing with now in this life for the cause of Christ. Let’s look to the day that the Lord will come again and manifest the Kingdom of God with great glory and power! We have authority based on the word of God and reign with Jesus Christ now spiritually over the works of the devil and have God's blessings flowing in our lives now but when Christ comes again he will manifest his authority outwardly over all the nations of the earth.
One of my favorite verses in the whole Bible is Romans 5:17…much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
1) Is life reigning over you or are you reigning over life through Jesus Christ?
2) Exercise your God-given authority and take dominion in Jesus name over life.
3) Let's fulfill the Great Commission of Christ together until he comes!
