Matthew 26:69-27:14
Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to him, saying, “You also were with Jesus of Galilee.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are saying.” 71 And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth. 72 But again he denied with an oath, “I do not know the Man!” 73 And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, “Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you.” 74 Then he began to curse and swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So he went out and wept bitterly.

Matthew 27
When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. 2 And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!” 5 Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. 6 But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood.” 7 And they consulted together and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. 8 Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced, 10 and gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.” 11 Now Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” Jesus said to him, “It is as you say.” 12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing. And the governor marveled greatly.

OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

Let' look at Peter and Judas Iscariot as examples to understand the difference between true and false repentance. Peter had boasted with great self-confidence that he would never deny Jesus but Jesus told him before the rooster crows you'll deny that you know me three times. Jesus knew this was a weakness in Peter. In another place Jesus said that Satan would tempt Peter and try to sift him like wheat or in other words try to destroy his faith. Jesus said to Peter I have prayed for you and yes Peter you're going to fall but when you get back up and are restored then you turn around and strengthen your brothers and encourage others by what you've gone through. So Peter did deny the Lord. But the Bible says he went out and wept bitterly after he did this. We know that Peter really repented with all this heart. The very personal story of how Jesus restored Peter is found in John chapter 21.

We know that he was completely restored to Jesus both in his personal relationship and his call and ministry. I believe in total restoration no matter how bad we have lived before we come to Christ and after we come to Christ and fall. I preached a message called “Restoration for all” The rise, fall and restoration of Peter. Many times Christians have a hard time returning to the Lord after they have blown it big time. It's not that Jesus doesn't want to restore them it's that they have a hard time forgiving themselves and believing that God still wants to use them. Friends, if God loved us before we were saved he doesn't change his mind if we backslide! No, God still loves us with the same love. This is so important to me that I posted this message “Restoration for all” on the home page of my website. Now let’s look at Judas Iscariot.
The Bible says that Judas had great remorse and he knew what he did was very evil in the eyes of God. He did return the 30 pieces of silver to the Chief Priests saying I have shed innocent blood but the Bible says that Judas went and hanged himself. So in other words, his repentance was not true repentance to God. He was just sorry that he was exposed for what he did. Maybe some of the other apostles had heard about what he did and instead of humbling himself before Jesus Christ and asking for forgiveness and restoration he just went and hanged himself. Why? He couldn’t live with himself and the guilt was unbearable. He didn't really repent, he was only sorry that he had been caught. The Bible in 2 Corinthians 7:10 “For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.” Peter had the godly sorrow working in him to produce true repentance and restoration. Judas Iscariot had the sorrow of the world and it produced in death in him.

WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?

When we fall don't run from Jesus run to him!
The Bible says Jesus is a merciful High Priest and welcomes us when we fall.  Remember, as Christian we are still human beings with the capacity to sin. We might have a bad day and do something stupid or sin against the Lord.

Approach the Throne of Grace through prayer with confidence
But the Bible says in Hebrews chapter 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Jesus see’s every weakness in each of us just as he saw the weakness in Peter but Jesus never stopped loving Peter and he will never stop loving you or me either! So when we do blow it remember that Jesus knows what it's like to be human and he can sympathize with us and he invites us to just come just as we are to the throne:

First, receive mercy or forgiveness.
How do you do this? Simply confess to Jesus whatever sin you have committed and he will forgive you and cleanse you from all unrighteousness. (Ref; 1 John 1:9)

Second, receive grace to help in time of need.
In other words, ask the Lord to give you the power and ability to overcome the temptation to sin when sin comes knocking at your door! You see God has both mercy and grace for his children. We need to grow secure in God's love and live a life of ongoing repentance, restoration and by the grace of God grow strong in the Word of God overcoming all the world, our own flesh and every temptation Satan throws at us.

The Bible says in 1 John 2:14-17…I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one. 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

Do you see how the Bible says that you grow strong because the word of God is in you? This is the way that God imparts his  empowering grace to us to overcome through prayer and the Word of God. That's my commentary. This is your brother Nick Boork saying have a great day in the Lord and thanks for listening to the one year Bible club. Let's fulfill the great commission of Christ together until He comes!
