February 15 Mark 1:1-28
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 As it is written in the Prophets: “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.”  3 “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight.’” 4 John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. 5 Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And he preached, saying, “There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose. 8 I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

9 It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. 11 Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” 12 Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness. 13 And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him.14 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

16 And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 17 Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18 They immediately left their nets and followed Him. 19 When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets. 20 And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him. 21 Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught. 22 And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

23 Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26 And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him. 27 Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” 28 And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.

OKAY HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

John Mark wrote the Gospel of Mark. He was the cousin of Barnabas who is prominent in the book of Acts. Most Bible scholars agree that Mark wrote his gospel from Rome with the assistance of the apostle Peter. It is the first and shortest of the four Gospels. Mark sees Jesus as a man of action! Chapter 1 starts with the ministry of John the Baptist who was the forerunner of Jesus Christ preparing the people of Israel to receive the promised Messiah. John preached a bold message of repentance and multitudes of people came to hear John preach. The Holy Spirit brought conviction upon many hearts and a spiritual revival broke out in Israel.

Jesus baptism and the Trinity revealed
Jesus came to John and he himself was baptized not because Jesus had any sin but He did it as an example to fulfill all righteousness and to be publicly identified by John as the Messiah. At Jesus baptism, we see the Trinity of God Father, Son and Holy Spirit manifesting. The Holy Spirit came down upon Jesus in the form of a dove and the Father’s voice was heard from heaven saying “This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.” At this point Jesus had not performed one miracle yet the Father said this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.

This means that the Father was pleased with Jesus character and his obedience. Jesus spent the first 30 years of his life growing in his own understanding of who he was as the divine Son of God living in a human body as the Son of Man. Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to confront Satan over 40 day period of time. Mark doesn't record in depth the details found in both Matthew and Luke's gospel however Jesus resisted all the temptations of the evil one. He never sinned. Mark records that John the Baptist had been put into prison then Jesus began his public ministry.

The Message of the Kingdom of God
Jesus began preaching a radical message! He preached the time is fulfilled and the kingdom of heaven is at hand so repent and believe the gospel! In other words, now is the time you can enter into the kingdom of God but you have to do it through repentance, turning away from your sins and believing by faith in Jesus Christ.

1. The Kingdom of God is now available.
2.  You have to repent of sin to enter it.
3.  You have to believe in the Messenger of the Kingdom, Jesus Christ.

Jesus called his first four disciples. Simon called Peter his brother Andrew and James and John. They were fishermen by trade so Jesus gave them the promise that they would become fishers of men. In other words, follow me guys and you will have a new job. I will teach you how to fish for men! The Bible says they left their boats and nets and followed Jesus. And Jesus is still calling people today to follow Him to become fishers of men. Ministry at the synagogue Jesus went into a synagogue and began teaching. The people were totally blown away because his teaching came with an authority and force that they had never experienced before. This was no dull, dead, boring lecture on theology. It was as if the atmosphere was suddenly charged with electricity when Jesus spoke. Demons trembled at His presence and acknowledged him as the Son of living God. Jesus rebuked and cast out devils from people everywhere he went. In this synagogue there was a man who had an unclean spirit and Jesus took authority over that spirit and commanded him to come out of the man and it obeyed him. This was a constant ministry of Jesus Christ setting people free from the demon power. Word spread far and wide about this new prophet from Nazareth called Jesus.

Jesus was manifesting the spiritual power and dominion of the kingdom of God setting people free! God never created people to be demon oppressed or live in bondage. Jesus brought a spiritual power that the scribes and Pharisees knew nothing about. I personally have seen many people set free from demons through my ministry preaching of the gospel and using the name of the Lord Jesus Christ in prayer. The Holy Spirit continues to do the works of Jesus through his disciples today. Friends, this is your brother Nick Boork saying thanks for listening to the One Year Bible Club and let's fulfill the Great Commission of Christ together until he comes!
