February 18 - Mark 3:7-30
But Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea. And a great multitude from Galilee followed Him, and from Judea 8 and Jerusalem and Idumea and beyond the Jordan; and those from Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they heard how many things He was doing, came to Him. 9 So He told His disciples that a small boat should be kept ready for Him because of the multitude, lest they should crush Him. 10 For He healed many, so that as many as had afflictions pressed about Him to touch Him. 11 And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw Him, fell down before Him and cried out, saying, “You are the Son of God.” 12 But He sternly warned them that they should not make Him known.
13 And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him. 14 Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, 15 and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons: 16 Simon, to whom He gave the name Peter; 17 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges, that is, “Sons of Thunder”; 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananite; 19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. And they went into a house.
20 Then the multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread. 21 But when His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, “He is out of His mind.” 22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebub,” and, “By the ruler of the demons He casts out demons.” 23 So He called them to Himself and said to them in parables: “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself, and is divided, he cannot stand, but has an end. 27 No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house. 28 “Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter; 29 but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation”— 30 because they said, “He has an unclean spirit.”
OKAY HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
Jesus was casting out so many demons from people that the Scribes came to examine what he was doing. Now remember, the Scribes were the religious authorities that acted as attorneys in Jesus day. They made pronouncements and developed laws. They came to the conclusion that the only way Jesus could have such power over so many evil spirits was because he Himself was empowered by Beelzebub the Prince and ruler of all demons. Jesus used the situation to expose the great error of the Scribes conclusion by asking a logical question followed by clarifying a simple principle: “How can Satan cast out Satan? And any house or kingdom divided against itself will not stand.”
From the beginning of Jesus ministry He declared that the Spirit of the Lord was upon him because he had anointed him to preach the gospel to the poor and that one of the signs of the Gospel would be preaching deliverance to the captives. The Bible clearly teaches that it was by the anointing of the Holy Spirit that Jesus defeated the devil everywhere he went. Acts 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, Who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. Also 1 John 3:8…For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. No, it wasn't through Satan that Jesus was casting out Satan but it was through the power of the Holy Spirit! Then Jesus said every kind of sin and blasphemy will be forgiven but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness but is subject to eternal condemnation because they said that Jesus had an unclean spirit. In other words, the Scribes were saying that Jesus spiritual power was the work of the devil.
This is a solemn warning given by the Son of God about the danger of blasphemy the unpardonable sin. Strong's G987 – blasphēmeō
1) to speak reproachfully, rail at, revile, calumniate, blaspheme
2) to be evil spoken of, reviled, railed at.
This is what the Scribes did. They called the work of the Holy Spirit the work of Satan. This is what Jesus says is the unpardonable sin. The good news is, that God forgives all sins except this one. So no matter what kind of sin, offense, trespass or law we have broken God's mercy is big enough to forgive us if we simply repent and ask his forgiveness. What's also important about this is that if a Christian is being lied to by the devil and they keep hearing in their mind that God doesn't love them and won’t forgive them they need to ask themselves a simple question. Have I committed the unpardonable sin of blasphemy? If they haven't committed the unpardonable sin then God promises clearly in his Word; “If we confess our sins He's faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
WHAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE?
Beware of blasphemy! Never call the work of the Holy Spirit the work of Satan. The Devil does not cast himself out of people! However Jesus gave His disciples power to cast out devils as we advance the Kingdom of God.
If you haven't committed the unpardonable sin of blasphemy then remember God is no respecter or persons. He's not going to forgive one person and not another because He does not favor one over another. The truth is God loves everyone equally so walk in His forgiveness and love today!
