February 19 Mark 3:31-4:25
Then His brothers and His mother came, and standing outside they sent to Him, calling Him. 32 And a multitude was sitting around Him; and they sai
d to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are outside seeking You.” 33 But He answered them, saying, “Who is My mother, or My brothers?” 34 And He looked around in a circle at those who sat about Him, and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.”
Mark 4 And again He began to teach by the sea. And a great multitude was gathered to Him, so that He got into a boat and sat in it on the sea; and the whole multitude was on the land facing the sea. 2 Then He taught them many things by parables, and said to them in His teaching: 3 “Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. 4 And it happened, as he sowed, that some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds of the air came and devoured it. 5 Some fell on stony ground, where it did not have much earth; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth. 6 But when the sun was up it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away. 7 And some seed fell among thorns; and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no crop. 8 But other seed fell on good ground and yielded a crop that sprang up, increased and produced: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.” 9 And He said to them, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”
10 But when He was alone, those around Him with the twelve asked Him about the parable. 11 And He said to them, “To you it has been given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to those who are outside, all things come in parables, 12 so that ‘Seeing they may see and not perceive, And hearing they may hear and not understand; Lest they should turn, And their sins be forgiven them.’” The Parable of the Sower Explained 13 And He said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? 14 The sower sows the word. 15 And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts. 16 These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness; 17 and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they stumble. 18 Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, 19 and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 20 But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”
21 Also He said to them, “Is a lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed? Is it not to be set on a lampstand? 22 For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” 24 Then He said to them, “Take heed what you hear. With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to you who hear, more will be given. 25 For whoever has, to him more will be given; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.”
OKAY HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
Jesus said that the parable of the sower was the basic parable that people need to comprehend to understand the Kingdom of God. He really emphasized hearing the Word of God and the condition of men's hearts. It's apparent that there is a spiritual war going on and the Word of God is being attacked by Satan. Jesus said when anyone hears the Word, Satan comes immediately trying to pull the Word of God of their hearts so they won't believe.
Other people hear the Word of God and receive it joyfully. But because they don't have any roots or strong foundations when trials or persecution come because of the Word they fall away.
Other people receive the word of God but then they allow all kinds of other things to come into their lives just like weeds and thorns in a garden. These other things end up taking priority over the Word of God in their lives and they don't bear any fruit that remains.
Others receive the Word and they produce a crop or a harvest some thirtyfold others sixty fold some hundredfold. Then Jesus said “he that has ears to hear let them hear” When Jesus put emphasis on a point of His teaching it's obviously extremely important! Listen to how these verses sound in the Amplified version: 23 If any man has ears to hear, let him be listening and let him perceive and comprehend. 24 And He said to them, Be careful what you are hearing. The measure [of thought and study] you give [to the truth you hear] will be the measure [of virtue and knowledge] that comes back to you--and more [besides] will be given to you who hear. 25 For to him who has will more be given; and from him who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away [by force],
So when Jesus said be careful what you hear he meant listen closely, take is seriously, think about it, meditate on it, process it in your mind because as it says in the amplified version the measure of thought and study you give to the truth you hear will be the measure of virtue meaning (power to change) that comes into your life. Then Jesus said when we give ourselves to serious study of the word of God it has a multiplying effect because He said even more will be given to us. However, Jesus said from him who has nothing even what he has will be taken away by force, wow! In other words, if we don't apply the Word of God seriously to our lives it’s meaningless and we will lose it. James, who was Jesus half-brother really got this point. He wrote something very similar in James 1:22-24 I like how the message Bible reads: 22-24 Don't fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don't act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like. This is one of the reasons I record the New Testament in my own voice and make it available to read as well. With the Lord's help, I want to bring forth a 100 fold harvest of souls, fruit that remains, disciples, people that follow the Lord Jesus Christ with all their hearts and become like him being transformed from the inside out through the Word and Spirit of God.
