And Jesus answered and spoke to them again by parables and said: 2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son, 3 and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come. 4 Again, he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.”’ 5 But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business. 6 And the rest seized his servants, treated them spitefully, and killed them. 7 But when the king heard about it, he was furious. And he sent out his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. 8 Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.
9 Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.’ 10 So those servants went out into the highways and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good. And the wedding hall was filled with guests. 11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment. 12 So he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 “For many are called, but few are chosen.”
15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how they might entangle Him in His talk. 16 And they sent to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth; nor do You care about anyone, for You do not regard the person of men. 17 Tell us, therefore, what do You think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you test Me, you hypocrites? 19 Show Me the tax money.” So they brought Him a denarius. 20 And He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” 21 They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 22 When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left Him and went their way.
23 The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, 24 saying: “Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. 25 Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother. 26 Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh. 27 Last of all the woman died also. 28 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven. 31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.
OKAY, HERE’S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
Let's look at Jesus parable of the wedding feast.
The picture that Jesus paints in the minds of the hearers was that of a king sending special invitations to a royal wedding. This is equivalent to receiving a hand-delivered invitation from the president of the United States inviting you to a wedding of one of his children. Nobody would reject such an invitation because of the honor associated with it regardless of political affiliation. I mean, when you get an invitation to visit the White House you go. Jesus is teaching us that God is father the highest ruler of the universe and of the nations has sent an invitation to every person in every nation starting with Israel. However, the majority of the residents in Israel have rejected God's invitation to the wedding of his son Jesus Christ. The Lord said many gave excuses that they were just too busy and occupied with things of this world and this life to stop what they are doing to attend a wedding. This is how it is today, when people hear about the gospel of Jesus Christ many times they just blow it off as something not really important. They don't take the invitation to be saved seriously.
However the Lord keeps sending his servants and inviting multitudes of people to attend the wedding of his son. God was angry with those that mistreated his servants and didn't honor his invitation to attend the wedding and because the invitation was from the King the rejection of the invitation meant pure rebellion from the citizens. This is why Jesus said that the king ordered his armies to destroy the cities of those it rejected his invitation. This obviously is symbolic of the final judgment to come on the world depicted vividly in the book of Revelation. Now the good news is, that multitudes of people did receive the King's invitation to attend the wedding of his son which in this parable means accepting the invitation to be saved. The Bible teaches that at the end of this age there will be a royal divine wedding that finalizes the covenant between God and his people through Jesus Christ it's called the marriage supper of the Lamb!
Revelation 19:9 Then he said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’” And he said to me, “These are the true sayings of God.” I'm looking forward to being there. It will be a time of great celebration for all the saints to finally be together in God's presence forever. Now in the parable, Jesus said that the King would come in to the wedding celebration to see all the guests. The king noticed a man that did not have on a wedding garment. When the king asked the man how he got into the wedding hall without having on a wedding garment the man was speechless. This is how will be on the day of judgment for those that stand before God without being clothed in the righteousness of Jesus Christ through his salvation. The Bible teaches that we must be clothed with God's righteousness. People that think that they will have eternal life with God in heaven based on their own self works and their own righteousness will be eternally disappointed when they are cast into hell. This is why Jesus said that the man was speechless and he was bound and cast out into outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. In other words, eternal regret because they thought that they could get into the wedding on their own terms and they refused the wedding garment that was required.
Remember what Adam and Eve did when they sinned against God? They tried to cover themselves with fig leaves because they knew they were naked and they were ashamed. But what did God do? The Bible says that he slayed animals and covered them with their skins. That was a type of the salvation God would provide through his son Jesus Christ. Christ gave his life, was nailed to the cross, poured out his holy blood and now through faith in what Jesus did for us we receive God's righteousness and are assured of being accepted in Heaven. Listen to these Bible verses that teach us that our sins are washed away by the blood of Jesus Christ and how God provides for us the robe of righteousness:
Isaiah 61:10 says that God clothes true believers with a robe of righteousness: “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness…
Revelation 1:5-6 …To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Revelation 7:14 says that the saved have; “washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”
2 Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Jesus said in Luke 15:22 of the prodigal son was restored to his father completely by receiving a new robe on him. This robe symbolic of being clothed or covered with God's righteousness: “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet.
Two Questions:
1) Are you clothed with the robe of righteousness through the blood of Jesus Christ?
2) Where are you today in your relationship with the father?
If you are far away from God, like the prodigal son in Luke chapter 15 then returned to the father because he's waiting for you with compassion no matter how bad you messed up. God's love is eternal and he will clothe all his sons and daughters that return to him in humble repentance confessing their sins with the new robe of his righteousness which means right standing with God through faith in Jesus Christ! Remember, when we try to cover our sins ourselves we will end up naked and exposed like Adam and Eve but when we trust in Jesus Christ salvation for us God will clothe us with the robe of righteousness and we will be ready to enter Heaven to enjoy the presence of God forever and celebrate the marriage supper of the Lamb!
