“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household! 26 Therefore do not fear them. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. 27 “Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven. 34 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; 36 and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ 37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.

40 “He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. 41 He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”
11 Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities. 2 And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples 3 and said to Him, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” 4 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: 5 The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6 And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”

OKAY, HERE’S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

Preach on the roof tops
First I want to look at what Jesus has to say in verse 27 “Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. This is a very interesting saying of Jesus Christ. What does it mean? Back in the days of Jesus, the teachers or the doctors of the law of God in the Synagogues used interpreters to preach through. They would whisper their teaching into the ears of the interpreter and then the interpreter would proclaim it to the people. The Lord is applying this same custom to his disciples. Jesus was saying, what I have been teaching you privately behind closed doors, my doctrine, my message, take to the world. Another application today would be what we hear in the darkness of our prayer closet we should declare publicly as we preach the gospel.

The Lord talks about entering into the closet of prayer and when you've shut the door pray your father who is in secret and your father who is in secret will reward you openly. If preachers will receive their messages from God by seeking him in faith the Lord will be with them publicly as they preach manifesting His power through salvations, healings, signs and wonders. Another application would be what you hear in the ear preach on the house tops. Today the Holy Spirit teaches us all truths and reveals the things of Christ to us. When Jesus says to preach upon the house tops, he's saying get the message out to as many people as you possibly can. Today we have technology to help us proclaim the message of Jesus Christ. For example
  • We have radio.
  • We have television.
  • Now the Internet is going into countries that are closed to missionaries.

Isaiah 40:9 O Zion, You who bring good tidings, Get up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, You who bring good tidings, Lift up your voice with strength, Lift it up, be not afraid; Say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!” This was prophetic of the preaching of the gospel. So when Jesus says proclaim it from the house tops he's saying get the word out to the whole world lift up your voice with strength, don't hide the gospel, preach it to the whole world so everyone can hear and be saved.

Isaiah 35 and 61 prophetic descriptions of the Messiah’s ministry match what was happening through Jesus. John was suffering in prison for preaching righteousness. John assumed that if Jesus was the Messiah He would use his power to get him released out of prison but it was not to be. This is why Jesus told John’s disciples about the miracles happening in his ministry because John would know through the Scriptures that Jesus was in fact the Messiah. This is why Jesus also added that John would be blessed if he was not offended because Jesus didn’t do for him what he thought he should do. Sometimes we put expectations on God that are not according to His will for us and then when things don’t go the way we wish we are tempted to think that God has forgot about us or doesn’t care. The truth is, no matter what we go through Jesus is the Christ the Son of God the promised Savior of the world and the Bible teaches in Romans 8 that nothing can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
