January 19 ~ Matthew 12:46-13:23
While He was still talking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him. 47 Then one said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.” 48 But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”

Chapter 13

On the same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea.
2 And great multitudes were gathered together to Him, so that He got into a boat and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. 3 Then He spoke many things to them in parables, saying: “Behold, a sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them. 5 Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. 6 But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away. 7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them. 8 But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9 He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” 10 And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” 11 He answered and said to them, “Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 13 Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says:

‘Hearing you will hear and shall not understand, And seeing you will see and not perceive; 15 For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.’ 16 But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear; 17 for assuredly, I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

18 “Therefore hear the parable of the sower: 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside.20 But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. 22 Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. 23 But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”

OKAY, HERE’S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

First I want to focus in on family relationships.

Jesus had a natural family with father, mother, brothers and sisters. Now we need to remember that Joseph was not Jesus biological father because Jesus was born of Mary and she was a virgin at the time of Jesus birth.

In this passage of Scripture, it doesn't record Joseph being there. We know very little about what happened to Joseph. Church history teaches that Joseph died sometime early in Jesus life. We do know that Joseph and Mary produced several children after Jesus was born. Joseph wasn't in the scene and he wasn't at the crucifixion when Christ was crucified. The last time we hear anything about Joseph was when they took the trip to Jerusalem at the Passover. After this time the Bible doesn't mention Joseph again.

While Jesus was teaching his disciples His mother Mary and brothers and sisters came to speak with Him. Jesus took the opportunity to elevate his disciples to the status of family members with him. Jesus said whoever does the will of my father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother. According to Jesus, doing the will of his father in heaven makes a person a family member of his.

The question is what is the will of the father in heaven?

The will of the father is that everyone be saved. This is very clear from the following verses of Scripture;

Jesus said in John 6:40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is…long suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

Jesus said in John 3:7…‘You must be born again.’

When we believe and receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we are born again by the Spirit of God and added to the family of God. That's the first step in doing the will of the Father, becoming His child through faith in Jesus Christ. Once we are saved the Bible reveals that it is God’s will that we become like Jesus in character and mission until we are glorified eternally in His presence.

Romans 8:28-30 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

What a wonderful thing it is to be part of the family of God! This is how the local church is supposed to be, a spiritual family. Paul encouraged Timothy, a young pastor to have this view of the local church.

1 Timothy 5:1 Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity.

Question: How do you feel about your local church?

Do you feel like it’s a family bound together in relationships in Christ or does it feel more like a religious institution that is rather impersonal?
