July 13 ~ Romans 1:18-32
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. 24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.
HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
Let's look at the wrath of God against sin and the universal sinfulness of humanity. Paul says that the gospel is the power of God to save both Jew and Gentile. The question is saved from what? Of course the Bible has a black and white teaching that there is a heaven and there is a hell and what we do with Jesus Christ determines our eternal destinies. In the remainder of Romans chapter 1 the apostle Paul paints a picture of the universal sinfulness of mankind and the downward trend of humanity falling farther and farther and farther away from the Creator. Mankind is not getting better morally through self helps and self effort! Are you kidding? No, men separated from God become the worst of sinners!
This is why we need a Savior! People are lost in their sins. The whole world is sick with the disease of sin from head to toe. This is why Jesus said those that are whole have no need of a physician but those that are sick, I did not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. The Jesus who walked the earth nearly 2000 years ago and healed those with physical sicknesses is the only one that can reach down and also heal the soul of man and cause him to be born again and receive a new divine holy nature that wants to love and please God. This is what sets Christianity apart from all other world religions. The Bible just comes out and tells it like it is, that we’re all sinners and that Jesus Christ is the Son of God the only Savior of the world that can change our hearts and make us new creatures in Christ by grace through faith in him.
Without God filling our lives we end up living to satisfy the flesh which is our corrupt carnal nature. When people turn their backs on God and do not worship him as the Almighty Creator and give him the glory and honor and worship that he alone deserves, they inevitably begin to worship themselves and create idols of their own lives and live in a state of complete self-deception and spiritual darkness, living from one sin to another.
When it says in verse 18 that the wrath of God has been revealed from Heaven upon all ungodliness this is a reference back to the Old Testament. Remember in Genesis 6 the story of the flood? This was God manifesting his judgment on a world that decided they could live without God. Only Noah and his family were saved because they obeyed God and entered the Ark which was a type of Christ.
God revealed his righteousness and moral standards through the 10 Commandments and the law given to Moses. He judged Egypt for their idols and evil treatment of his people. Against this backdrop, mankind has failed miserably to live up to the righteous standards of God. The Lord sent prophets time and time again to warn his people to repent, even sending his servants to cities and nations outside of Israel like Nineveh and Babylon warning them to repent of their idolatry and sins.
Remember Sodom and Gomorrah? The Bible says that the judgment of fire that destroyed these two cities was an example of God’s hatred against these sins. The Lord sent his angels to Lot and his family with a message to come out of the city because the Lord was going to pour out his wrath. Everyone thought that Lot was joking. They didn’t take him seriously. Much like today when people hear about the need to be saved from their sins and the eternal judgment of the fires of hell awaiting those that don’t repent. Sodom and Gomorrah were burned to ashes! Jude 7: as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
This is the very thing that Romans chapter 1 says will happen when we turn our backs on God and go our own way living in the kinds of sins outlined in the book of Romans. These choices will eventually bring the wrath of God. There’s a lot of people and even unregenerate theologians that do not believe Romans chapter 1 applies to our society today. They would love to rip this chapter right out of the Bible. I’ve heard with my own ears top political leaders in United States deny the authority of these Scriptures saying that they are not relevant for today. Woe to us! God have mercy and send a revival granting true repentance to America the beautiful. When the majority reject God we can only expect wrath to come. Remember, we are under the New Covenant of grace but I do not agree that God’s salvation in Christ to individuals negates his wrath over nations.
WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?
1) It’s no mystery to understand the righteous standards of God.
2) The Lord made examples out of several cities in the Old Testament bringing his judgment on them because of their sins.
3) We should not reject the Word of God but except it’s truth that all of us are sinners and need the gospel of Jesus Christ desperately to be saved and changed from the inside out.
4) When people reject the Gospel and turn their backs on the Creator, they only have their sinful corrupt nature to live for and this becomes total idolatry.
5) The root of the problems in this world are based in humanities decision to reject God and live for self. For this reason chaos and corruption rules in unregenerate hearts that have not yielded to God through Jesus Christ.
6) Pray that God have mercy on the United States of America and turn the majority back to serving the living God. If the country decides to forget God we can only expect his wrath to come.
