Romans 2:1-24

God’s Righteous Judgment

2 Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. 2 But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things. 3 And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: 7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, 9 tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; 10 but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God.

12 For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law 13 (for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified; 14 for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, 15 who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them) 16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.

The Jews Guilty as the Gentiles

17 Indeed you are called a Jew, and rest on the law, and make your boast in God, 18 and know His will, and approve the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law, 19 and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, having the form of knowledge and truth in the law. 21 You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal? 22 You who say, “Do not commit adultery,” do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law? 24 For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” as it is written.

Okay here’s my commentary

We all have the same measuring stick on the day of judgment

In these Scriptures, God is revealed as the ultimate judge of humanity. When we all stand before God we can be confident about how God will Judge us. He’s not going to use a different standard for different groups of people. Why? Because verse 11 says: “For there is no partiality with God”. This means that we will all be treated the same! We can count on God not using a different measuring stick when we stand before him after this life on the day of judgment. I really want to say hallelujah for this because I know what to expect!

What the Bible is teaching us here is that there is ultimately a judgment in which all of humanity will appear before God. The reality in the eyes of God is that all of humanity has sinned in one form or another and are guilty and deserving of wrath. However, God is going to judge all of humanity by the same standards even those without the law and those trying to live righteous to keep the law. There will be eternal rewards for those that seek to please God and do his will. There will be an internal judgment of God’s wrath and punishment upon those that refuse to repent and follow God. It doesn’t matter whether you are born a Jew or if your a total pagan, a heathen, the measuring stick is going to be the same.

What is this measuring stick?

According to verse 16 it’s Jesus Christ and his gospel:

“In the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel”.

The question is:  What have we done with Jesus Christ in our lives?

Did we receive him as our Lord and Savior or did we reject him?  This is the ultimate question!  All of humanity has sinned and is therefore guilty before God but because God is love he has provided a way to save us through Jesus Christ taking our place, paying for our sins. This is the good news!!! We don’t have to try to save our selves by self effort! The main purpose of Jesus coming to earth was to become the SAVIOR of humanity! This is what the angel announced to Mary about Jesus:

Matthew 1:21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

My favorite declaration that Jesus said from the cross is; “It is finished”.

This is because the payment for all of our sins was finished when he died on the cross and shed his holy blood.

Jesus had no sin of his own to be punished for.

This is why he qualified to take our place and become our Savior.

He became our substitute! Ref; 2 Cor. 5:21

This is the standard that God will use to judge the entire world – Jesus Christ.

Did we repent from our sins and receive the salvation God has given to us freely through Jesus Christ or did we harden our hearts and go our own way living in sin?

What's the bottom line?

1) When it comes to the final judgment the Bible says there is no partiality with God.

2) The truth is that both Jew and Gentile are guilty before God because no one has obeyed the laws of God perfectly. All have sinned and therefore all are guilty whether they know the laws or don’t.

3) The Bible teaches us that God will use the same measuring stick for every person.

4) That measuring stick is Jesus Christ and His Gospel.

5) Questions becomes: What did we do with Jesus Christ? Did we make him our Savior and Lord of our lives or did we reject him by putting off the most important decision of our lives?

6) I have accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior so I know that when I stand before God my sins have already been judged. I know the Lord. I know his love and salvation. Do you?

7) Share Jesus Christ with someone today! Become a fisher of men for Jesus.
