July 15 ~ Romans 2:25 - 3:8
For circumcision is indeed profitable if you keep the law; but if you are a breaker of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26 Therefore, if an uncircumcised man keeps the righteous requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision? 27 And will not the physically uncircumcised, if he fulfills the law, judge you who, even with your written code and circumcision, are a transgressor of the law? 28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; 29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God.
3 What advantage then has the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision? 2 Much in every way! Chiefly because to them were committed the oracles of God. 3 For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? 4 Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar. As it is written: “That You may be justified in Your words, and may overcome when You are judged.” 5 But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unjust who inflicts wrath? (I speak as a man.) 6 Certainly not! For then how will God judge the world?
7 For if the truth of God has increased through my lie to His glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner? 8 And why not say, “Let us do evil that good may come”?—as we are slanderously reported and as some affirm that we say. Their condemnation is just.
OKAY HERE’S MY COMMENTARY
Let's look at inward and outward Jews and Christians. In these Scriptures, the apostle Paul contrasts Jews and Gentiles. What is a Jew? The Blue Letter Bible gives the simple definition:
Since Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah has come, died on the cross and rose again the third day all that believe on him are saved. The Holy Spirit does an inward work inside of every believer. We can apply the principle of circumcision to our own lives as well as Christians. We could say, he is not a Christian who is one outwardly but he is a true Christian who is one inwardly who lives not to hear the praise of men but to hear his praise come from God. I can’t stand plastic, hypocritical people that act like they have it altogether on the outside but inwardly you don’t find the love of God but horrible attitudes and painful ways when you associate with them. Yes it’s true, no one is perfect but if you are a true Christian Jesus said that people would know that we are his disciples if we have love one for another. I think that in these last days, which the Bible declares we’re living in now, we need to be extra careful about guarding our hearts because the Lord said during the time just before his second coming that many would become false in their faith. It starts from the inside and works its way out.
Matthew 24:10-14 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another.11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.
Notice all of the inward characteristics that Jesus said would become corrupt in the last days. All kinds of people getting offended at one another, betraying each other and hating one another. This kind of treatment and behavior would be the reason that the love of many would grow cold. So how do you protect your heart and continue to be a sincere Christian when you have to deal with so many negatives around you? Keep yourself filled with five things:
1) The love of God
2) The Word of God
3) The Holy Spirit
4) Forgiveness from the heart
5) True prayer: Here’s a prayer to be sincere: Philippians 1:9-11 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
Let’s be extra careful to keep things right inwardly in our Love for God and people and not allow ourselves to become inwardly uncircumcised. Remember, he is not a Jew just because of outward, physical circumcision but he is a Jew who is circumcised in the heart living to please God. Now that’s where I want to live spiritually. The Bible says man looks at the outward appearance but God is looking at our hearts.
WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?
1) If you were born Jewish you’re blessed!
2) The Jewish nation was entrusted with the Words of God.
3) Outward circumcision means nothing if you are not circumcised in the heart.
4) True faith brings us to a place of living to love and please God.
5) Be careful to guard your heart and not allow it to become corrupted with all of the evil influences coming through others around you in these last days before Christ returns.
7) I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back!
