Romans 3:9-31
All Have Sinned
9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.10 As it is written:
“There is none righteous, no, not one;
11 There is none who understands;
There is none who seeks after God.
12 They have all turned aside;
They have together become unprofitable;
There is none who does good, no, not one.”
13 “Their throat is an open tomb;
With their tongues they have practiced deceit”;
“The poison of asps is under their lips”;
14 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 Destruction and misery are in their ways;
17 And the way of peace they have not known.”
18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
God’s Righteousness Through Faith
21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Boasting Excluded
27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. 29 Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, 30 since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.
Okay here’s my commentary
The purpose of Gods laws are made known in these Scriptures. In verses 19 and 20 the Bible teaches us that the moral laws of God, the 10 Commandments especially are used by God to show all of us that we are sinners. Nobody has been able to keep all of the Commandments of God except for one person and his name is Jesus Christ. This is why it says in verse 21 that NOW a righteousness from God is introduced to the world that doesn’t come by trying to keep the laws of God. Although if you love God you will try your best to keep the moral laws of God otherwise we would embrace the lifestyle of lawlessness and this is completely condemned by Jesus Christ himself and is one of the chief reasons that people will be surprised on the judgment because they will hear from Christ depart from me, workers of iniquity or lawlessness.
However, the main point of these Scriptures is that although the law shows us that we are in fact sinner God has provided his own way of making us righteous with Him through faith in Jesus Christ. I have to tell you, that when I first became a Christian I struggled in my faith. I was up and down, believing then unbelieving. Satan was coming against me trying get me to not believe that God really loved me or that I was even saved. But thank God for the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God! These scriptures here in Romans chapter 3 were used by the Holy Spirit to enlighten my mind and strengthen my faith. I’ve probably read out loud and meditated on this portion of scripture well over 100 times. I came to understand and believe with great confidence that I could not earn righteousness. No, this was something that the Father has already provided to me through Jesus Christ his Son.
You see, in the judicial system you can’t punish somebody for the same crimes twice in a row. For example, a man comes before the judge and he is found guilty for his crimes. The judge gives him a sentence of 10 years in prison, hard time. The man does the 10 years behind bars and then is released back into society a free man. He can’t be tried again for the same crimes that he’s already been found guilty of and served the sentence the judge gave him of 10 years in prison. This is how it is with us also. We’re all found guilty of our sins and as we stand before God the judge we hear that the sentence of punishment is death. However just as the bailiff is about ready to come in the court room and take us away, in walks the son of the judge. He boldly announces right in front of everyone in the court room to his father; Father I will take the punishment for this guilty sinner! I will give my life for his. Let him go! This is exactly what Jesus Christ, the Son of God did for all of us. He paid for all our sins on the cross!
What's the bottom line?
1) People are sinners from head to toe!
2) God’s laws show us we are sinners and we can never save ourselves.
3) NOW God has provided His own righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ.
4) Remember to use the sword of the Spirit, the written Word of God to defeat the accusations of the devil against you.
5) Your sins can never be punished twice! Jesus already paid for them once. Stop trying to pay for them yourself. Just repent and believe in the finished work of Christ as your Savior.
6) Jesus is our righteousness. Keep your faith rooted and grounded in His love and salvation being confident in this truth. Stop trying to earn righteousness and just accept Jesus as your righteousness. He paid for your sins already. This is the GOOD NEWS! Rejoice in Him always and set others free with this amazing truth!
