July 26 ~ Romans 9:25-10:13
As He says also in Hosea: “I will call them My people, who were not My people, and her beloved, who was not beloved.” 26 “And it shall come to pass in the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not My people,’ There they shall be called sons of the living God.” 27 Isaiah also cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, the remnant will be saved. 28 For He will finish the work and cut it short in righteousness, Because the Lord will make a short work upon the earth.” 29 And as Isaiah said before: “Unless the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we would have become like Sodom, and we would have been made like Gomorrah.”
30 What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness of faith; 31 but Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of righteousness. 32 Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone. 33 As it is written:
“Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, and whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”

Chapter 10
Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. 5 For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, “The man who does those things shall live by them.” 6 But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down from above) 7 or, “‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. 13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

The Righteousness of Faith
In these Scriptures the apostle Paul further clarifies that the salvation of God is both to the Jews and to the Gentiles. Israel had received the law and the promises of the coming Messiah. However, when Jesus Christ came the majority did not believe nor receive Him as the Messiah. The Scriptures say that only a remnant of Jews excepted Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Savior of the world but the majority stumbled over the rock, Jesus Christ. This is why the Gospel first came to the nation of Israel because they were in fact the descendants of Abraham who had originally received the promises of God to save the world through his seed.

The love of God is so great that he never intended to restrict his salvation to just one nation. God promised to have sons and daughters throughout the entire earth even in the places where back in the Old Testament there was a clear distinction between Jew and Gentile. What made the nation of Israel special was they were entrusted with the laws and the promises of God. The reality is that within the law and writings of the prophets were abundant promises given by the Holy Spirit pointing to the righteousness of God through Jesus Christ that would become available for all of humanity! So the point that Paul is making here is that although Israel had the law they tried to be righteous through conforming to the law and they missed the greater point that Jesus Christ was the promised Savior standing right in front of them. This is why Jesus said to the Jews: John 5:39-40 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.

So only a small percentage of Jewish believers we’re saved through faith in Jesus Christ. This is what the Scriptures teach, that trying to keep the laws of God does not make us righteous in a legalistic sense because in own power we all fall short. The law shows us we are sinners in need of a Savior! It doesn’t make us righteous. However, the righteousness of God comes to us through faith in Jesus Christ apart from the law.

But the question is what is righteousness?
Righteousness means right standing with God
It means your conscience has been cleansed through the blood of Jesus Christ by faith in him alone.
It’s a gift that you cannot earn by self-effort!
It’s what you get when you become a Christian instantaneously by faith.
It comes through the convicting and revealing work of the Holy Spirit.
The righteousness of faith is first believed in the heart and then confessed by our mouth.

What is this belief and confession?

It is confessing that Jesus Christ is your Lord and that you believe that God has raised him from the dead. This means that you believe the message of the Gospel with all of your heart and you confess this faith that you have inwardly by making Jesus Christ the Lord of your life. It means you believe and confess Jesus is risen from the dead and that he is your Lord! The word of faith is a living thing. It doesn’t look back at the Old Testament promises wondering when they will be fulfilled. It’s not waiting for Christ to come and save us. No it believes right now that Jesus Christ has been crucified and raised from the dead and is alive to save every sinner right now! This kind of faith speaks from the heart what it believes and it believes Jesus died for our sins and confesses him as Lord. When a person does this the Holy Spirit causes them to be saved!

However, one word of caution is that just going through the motions of leading people to pray a prayer by repetition is no guarantee that anyone will be saved. The Scriptures teach us that only the Holy Spirit can cause a person to confess Jesus Christ as Lord and be born again imparting the life of God on the inside, in the spiritual sense. 1 Corinthians 12:3…no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

John 3:6 Jesus said: That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
I know about true and false conversion because when I was about 11 years old I heard the gospel and was asked if I believed and I said yes. So, immediately the preacher took me and baptized me in water. But I have to tell you, I know that I wasn’t really born-again. Why? Because there was zero fruit and evidence of repentance and true conversion. The only thing that happened to me was I heard about Jesus and was baptized in water and got wet on the outside. However, about four years later when I ended up in Oakland County Children’s Village in Pontiac Michigan I had a real conversion experience. I called out to God to save me. I sensed God’s love and his presence on the inside. My life was radically changed. I was consumed reading the Word of God and I began to tell everyone about Jesus Christ. The chains of addiction to marijuana were broken after about three months from the time I was saved. You see, now God was doing His work in me by the Holy Spirit. When I was 18 years of age I was re-baptized water at Christ for the Nations Institute but this time I did it for the Lord not man.

WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?

1) Israel was originally given the laws and promises of God’s salvation

2) Only a remnant or a small percentage accepted Jesus as the promised Messiah

3) God’s salvation is for the entire world

4) The righteousness of the law cannot save us

5) Jesus Christ came, fulfilled the law and has become our righteousness

6) The Holy Spirit does the work of conviction of sin and causes us to believe and confess Jesus Christ as the risen Lord and Savior

7) The word of faith that we preach causes people to believe from the heart and confess with the mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior. This is the righteousness of faith and it is a free gift from God.

8)  Remember, true salvation is a result of our response to the Gospel being convicted by the Holy Spirit leading us to turn from sin and confess by faith that Jesus Christ is the risen Lord and only Savior resulting in a new birth that manifests in righteous living to please God from the heart!
