July 27 ~ Romans 10:14-11:12
How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things! 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” 17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. 18 But I say, have they not heard? Yes indeed: “Their sound has gone out to all the earth, And their words to the ends of the world.” 19 But I say, did Israel not know? First Moses says: “I will provoke you to jealousy by those who are not a nation I will move you to anger by a foolish nation.” 20 But Isaiah is very bold and says: “I was found by those who did not seek Me; I was made manifest to those who did not ask for Me.” 21 But to Israel he says: “All day long I have stretched out My hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”
Chapter 11
I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel, saying, 3 “Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life”? 4 But what does the divine response say to him? “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” 5 Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace. 6 And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.
7 What then? Israel has not obtained what it seeks; but the elect have obtained it, and the rest were blinded. 8 Just as it is written: “God has given them a spirit of stupor, Eyes that they should not see and ears that they should not hear, to this very day.” 9 And David says: “Let their table become a snare and a trap, A stumbling block and a recompense to them. 10 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see, and bow down their back always.” 11 I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles. 12 Now if their fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness!
OKAY, HERE’S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
In the last verse of yesterday's reading we find the promise of salvation in Romans chapter 10:13 which says that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. This is one of my favorite verses in the entire Bible because God makes it so simple for people to get saved. It doesn’t say that we need to understand everything about God or read the whole Bible first or experience a miracle or supernatural encounter but simply call on the name of the Lord. Paul builds on this by asking several questions about how people come to this place of calling on the Lord to be saved.
Again Romans 10:14-15 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent?
Notice the four questions all beginning with HOW are:
HOW can people call on a God they have not believed in?
HOW can they believe when they haven’t even heard about this God of salvation?
HOW can they hear without a preacher?
HOW can they preach unless they are sent?
What does it mean to be sent and sent by who? That’s what we’re going to get into today.
Jesus was the original sent one from the Father.
He started his ministry by proclaiming that the Holy Spirit had sent him to heal and preach!
Luke 4:17-19 And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
Jesus constantly proclaimed that the Father had sent him.
He said; I didn’t come from heaven to do what I want! I came to do what the Father wants me to do. He sent me, CEV
Christ sent the 12 apostles on a short term mission then the 70, then the whole church into all the world through His great commission.
In Acts 13 the church sent Barnabas and Paul as their first missionaries. It actually says they were sent by both the church and the Holy Spirit!
Acts 13:2-3 As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit…they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews.
The word sent in the Greek is apostellō

PRAYER TO APPLY THE WORD OF GOD TO OUR LIVES

- to order (one) to go to a place appointed
- to send away, dismiss
- to allow one to depart, that he may be in a state of liberty
- to order one to depart, send off
- All I wanted to do was preach the gospel and be a missionary.
- One step at a time from inner desire to Holy Ghost fire to preaching boldly even publicly!
- When your called to preach your just going to find a way to do it!
