March 17 - Luke 2:36-52
Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; 37 and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem. 39 So when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. 40 And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.

41 His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. 43 When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and His mother did not know it; 44 but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. 46 Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. 48 So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.” 49 And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” 50 But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them. 51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

Let's look at how Jesus came to understand who He was and what He was called to do. The Bible says that Mary and Joseph left Jerusalem after the festival and they supposed that Jesus was among their relatives somewhere in the group headed back home to Nazareth. However, after a day's journey they looked for Jesus and didn't find him. So they returned to Jerusalem looking for their son Jesus. They found him in the temple surrounded by teachers asking them questions and listening to them. Everyone was amazed at Jesus understanding of the Scriptures. Jesus was only twelve years old but even at that young age he was absorbed with spiritual things. In verses 48-49 Mary wanted to know why Jesus didn't return with them. She asked… “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.”

Jesus answer to her question are the first recorded words of Jesus and they are very important because they reveal to us that Jesus knew that Joseph was not his father and He understood that he was the Son of God. For this reason he was about his Father's business. And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” What is the father's business? It's all about redeeming humanity and restoring people to a right relationship with God. Jesus knew that was his main purpose. Jesus came to know through the Scriptures his divine purpose to be the Savior of the world. The Bible says that Christians are predestined to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. Romans 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Just like Jesus, we also come to understand our spiritual identity and purpose through the Word of God. And like Jesus, we grow spiritually when we attend church faithfully hearing the word of God being taught and preached by pastors and teachers that God has appointed in the church for this very purpose. When I first got saved back in 1982.  I was so hungry for God! I attended every church service I possibly could. I wanted to know God. I read every Christian book I could. I was so hungry and excited spiritually. I went to my pastor Ernie Woolner at Woodlawn Church in Royal Oak Michigan and ask him if I could start the Christian bookstore in the church because I wanted to get all the Christian books I was reading into the hands of others to help them grow spiritually and raise money to help support missionaries. I will never forget the day that he gave me a $150 to purchase books and get the bookstore going. This was a great encouragement to me. I was about my Father's business as a young Christian. I was hearing my pastor and in church all the time and I was inviting my friends to church from high school.

WHATS' THE BOTTOM LINE?

1) Born-again Christians are to grow up to become conformed to Jesus Christ

2) We discover our spiritual identity through the word of God

3) God becomes the center of our lives

4) Our father's business is people!

5) The Father sent Jesus to seek and save the lost and add them to His House the Church.

6) Jesus business was loving God and loving People.

7) Let's make that our business too!
