20March 20 - Luke 4:1-30
Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry. 3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” 4 But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’” 5 Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.” 8 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”9 Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you,’ 11 and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’” 12 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”13 Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.
14 Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. 15 And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. 16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” 20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”
23 He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in Your country.’” 24 Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 But I tell you truly, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; 26 but to none of them was Elijah sent except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.” 28 So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, 29 and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. 30 Then passing through the midst of them, He went His way.
OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
Let's look at what Jesus said He was sent to do.
Luke is the only writer of the four Gospels that records Jesus quoting the prophecy from Isaiah chapter 61 concerning His ministry. After Jesus made this declaration he said "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” So the people in the Jewish synagogue literally heard the fulfillment of a Bible prophecy. Jesus said he was anointed with the Holy Spirit for a purpose. What was it? He needed the power of God to do a supernatural work. You see, Jesus did not function as the Son of God the Creator when he was on earth. The Bible says Jesus existed before He was born of the Virgin Mary. Colossians 1:16 Says He was with the Father creating all things in the universe.
So why did Jesus limit his power when it came to doing the work of the ministry? Because He wanted to create a model that others could follow that believed on Him and became ministers. The Bible promises that the descendants of Christ would speak the same word of Jesus and have the same Spirit that operated in His life. This includes every born-again child of God that is filled with the Holy Spirit! Isaiah 59:20-21 “The Redeemer will come to Zion, and to those who turn from transgression in Jacob,” says the Lord. 21 “As for Me,” says the Lord, “this is My covenant with them: My Spirit who is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your descendants, nor from the mouth of your descendants’ descendants,” says the Lord, “from this time and forevermore.”
Here's what the Bible says the anointing of the Holy Spirit would do through Jesus Christ:
Preach the gospel to the poor: It takes the anointing of the Holy Spirit to preach the gospel in such a way that it touches men's hearts and minds with conviction of sin that leads them to recognize their need for Jesus Christ. Without Christ, the soul is empty, poor, desolate and dead. However when Christ enters the life of a sinner the riches of Heaven enter that person’s life. The soul becomes filled with the most valuable commodity in the universe; God Himself!
Heal the brokenhearted: Once our hearts are broken in repentance God promises to give us brand-new hearts. This is what it means to be born again, the heart becomes healed through the Holy Spirit. God actually gives us a new heart and removes the dead heart of stone and places within us a heart of flesh. In other words a living heart in a new relationship with God. Ezekiel 36:26-27 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
Proclaim liberty to the captives: The Holy Spirit anoints preachers to proclaim with authority and power that all slavery to sin and bondage to Satan is broken through Jesus Christ! The power of God sets people free from sin's bondage and the power of the devil. This is what Jesus told Paul he would be doing as a minister of the gospel. Acts 26:18 to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’
Recovering of sight to the blind: Jesus opened the eyes of people that were blind physically. However, the greater miracle is that by the Holy Spirit people's eyes are opened spiritually to things unseen with the natural eye. When the gospel is preached in the anointing of the Holy Spirit people’s spiritual eyes are opened to see their need for Christ and the truth that can set them free! The Bible teaches that before people are saved they are blinded by the devil. 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded…
Set at liberty those that are bruised: This means the Holy Spirit is able to reach down on the inside of every person and heal what is bruised. All the painful emotional experiences, rejection, abuse all can be healed through the Holy Spirit touching the inner man. How does this happen? The Holy Spirit reveals the heart of God to sinners much like Jesus did when He taught the parable of the prodigal son. Ref; Luke 15, Romans 5:8, Ephesians 3:16-19. God desires every lost person that's far away from Him to come to Him and His house the church where they will be welcomed, loved and totally restored in a right relationship with the Father God through Jesus Christ.
WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?
1) Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit to do the works of God.
2) Jesus did this as an example for other ministers to follow.
3) Spirit filled preaching is the only kind of preaching that will produce supernatural results.
4) The Holy Spirit will lead preachers to proclaim the written word of God in power.
5) Learn to work with the Holy Spirit and expect him to speak through you and produce the works of Jesus Christ in the lives of others through the written Word of God and the anointing of the Holy Spirit!
