March 21 - Luke 4:31-5:11
Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. 32 And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority. 33 Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, 34 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” 35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him. 36 Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” 37 And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region. 38 Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. But Simon’s wife’s mother was sick with a high fever, and they made request of Him concerning her. 39 So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them.

40 When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, “You are the Christ, the Son of God!” And He, rebuking them, did not allow them to speak, for they knew that He was the Christ. 42 Now when it was day, He departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them; 43 but He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.” 44 And He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.

Chapter 5
So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, 2 and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. 3 Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. 4 When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” 6 And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. 7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.” 11 So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.

OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

Let's look at the call of Peter by Jesus. We can learn many things looking at how Jesus called Peter. Jesus asked Peter to use his boat so he could preach to the multitude on the shore. After sharing the Word, Jesus told Peter to let down his nets to catch some fish. Peter told Jesus we've been fishing all night and haven't caught anything but because you tell me to do it I will. When Peter let down his net he caught so many fish that he had to call for his partners to come and help to bring it in!

It's interesting that Peter fell at Jesus knees. Remember this was while he was out on the sea in his boat. He said to Jesus, depart from me Lord because I am a sinful man. Peter recognized that Jesus was not an ordinary man. No, he had a revelation even at that point that he was at least a prophet sent by God and that God's supernatural power was manifesting right in front of his eyes. In other words, Peter came under conviction in the presence of God and didn't feel worthy to receive the blessings of God in his life. Jesus reassured him saying “Do not be afraid from now on you will catch men”. What did Jesus mean? First, by telling him not to be afraid he was welcoming and accepting him as a friend of God. You see Peter humbled himself and confessed that he was a sinner unworthy of the Lord and His blessings. The good news is Jesus came to seek and save the lost and Peter just got found!

Second, when Jesus told Peter “From now on you will catch men” He was saying Peter I'm calling you to work for me now. I think it's very interesting that Jesus used the natural skills that Peter already knew to communicate the spiritual work of the ministry he was calling him to. Fishing is very much like the work of evangelism. God never wastes any of our experiences. He uses all of our skills and natural abilities for his purposes. When we respond to the call of God in our lives to serve Him, He empowers us by the Holy Spirit and gives us spiritual gifts that enable us to do the works of Jesus Christ.

Remember, Peter was a fisherman by trade. You would think that God would pick someone that had at least a doctorate degree in theology to be the future leader of His Church. However, the Lord is the potter, we are the clay. He is a master at calling people then forming them into what He has predestined them to become. This is what Jesus said to His disciples in John 15:16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.

When we surrender our lives to Jesus then He can make us into the servants He has called us to be. So, never limit God by your own self-image and thinking. Jesus turned Peter the fisherman into Peter the Apostle. Peter became one of the greatest spiritual leaders the world has ever experienced. This should encourage you and me to not give up. Keep following Jesus and He will transform you into the person and servant of God He has called you and me to be.

WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?

1) Jesus is still calling people to serve Him and become fishers of men.

2) Don't be afraid but have faith in the goodness and love of God.

3) Take the limitations off what God is calling you to become and do.

4) The Lord will provide all of your needs even miraculously as he showed Peter.

5) The greatest purpose on earth is to become a fisher of men and that means influencing people to believe and receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
