March 23 - Luke 5:29-6:11
Then Levi gave Him a great feast in his own house. And there were a great number of tax collectors and others who sat down with them. 30 And their scribes and the Pharisees complained against His disciples, saying, “Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 31 Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” 33 Then they said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?” 34 And He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then they will fast in those days.” 36 Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved. 39 And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’”

Chapter 6
Now it happened on the second Sabbath after the first that He went through the grainfields. And His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate them, rubbing them in their hands. 2 And some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” 3 But Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read this, what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he went into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?” 5 And He said to them, “The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.” 6 Now it happened on another Sabbath, also, that He entered the synagogue and taught. And a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7 So the scribes and Pharisees watched Him closely, whether He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him. 8 But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Arise and stand here.” And he arose and stood. 9 Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one thing: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy?” 10 And when He had looked around at them all, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored as whole as the other. 11 But they were filled with rage, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

Today were going to look at Reformation versus Rebirth
Jesus did not conform to the religious traditions of His day. I mean He obeyed the laws of God perfectly however He did not fit into the religious box of the Sadducees, Scribes and Pharisees. In this portion of Scripture alone, Jesus and his disciples were criticized for eating with sinners, not fasting, eating grain from the fields and healing on the Sabbath! It's like nothing Jesus and His disciples did fit into the religious traditions of others.

This is why Jesus gave the parable teaching that no one could take a piece of new garment to patch a hole in an old garment because when washed the new piece would shrink and pull away from the old garment and make a bigger tear.

Again, to illustrate the same principle Jesus said no one puts new wine into old wine skins because the new wine would expand and burst open the old wineskin. Jesus said that new wine has to be put into new wine skins so that both are preserved. Jesus was teaching an important principle about the kingdom of God.

The meaning of this parable is clear Jesus, his teaching, the Holy Spirit and the Kingdom of God were completely new spiritual realities that could not be integrated with the old religious system and traditions of men. Jesus was bringing a new birth to humanity not a new religion! Jesus said in John chapter three “you must be born again to enter the kingdom of heaven” not you must be reformed by practicing the traditions of an old corrupt religious system.

Remember how Jesus manifested Himself to the seven churches in the book of Revelation? This was the true Church of Jesus Christ. However, to the Church at Ephesus He said you have lost your first love for me. They were already starting to move away from a close intimate relationship with Jesus Christ to just going through the motions as Christians. The last Church He spoke to, the Church at Laodicea, Jesus had nothing good to say about. They were going through the religious motions as followers of Christ but Christ Himself was now on the outside of the Church knocking on the door to get back in! They had pushed out of life and working of Christ to the point that He wasn't even in the church but on the outside. They had become an old wineskin.

Once Churches become old wine skins they become full of people like Scribes, Pharisees, and Sadducees that criticize any new life, freedom, healing, manifestation of power, deliverance, and fresh work of the Holy Spirit among them. Many times those that try to reform old wine skins only waste their time and end up splitting churches. Can a church be revived? Yes! But it takes the leaders and members becoming hungry for Jesus and the things of God, valuing a relationship with Jesus Christ as a lifestyle rather than just going through the outward religious motions of Christianity.

WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?

1) Jesus came to bring us a new birth not a new religion!

2) When the Holy Spirit came and filled the disciples on the day of Pentecost the church was born in power as a new spiritual entity.

3) After Peter preached a new message about Jesus Christ crucified for our sins and raised from the dead as Lord about 3000 people were added to a new wine skin, the Body of Christ, the Church.

4) According to Jesus, you can't pour the new life of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit into an old religious system.

Question: Is the new life of Christ and the Holy Spirit flowing freely in your life and Church or are you stuck in an old wine skin?
