March 26 - Luke 7:11-35
Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. 12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” 14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” 15 So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother. 16 Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, “God has visited His people.” 17 And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.
18 Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. 19 And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” 20 When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’” 21 And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight. 22 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them. 23 And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.” 24 When the messengers of John had departed, He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is he of whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.’ 28 For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29 And when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.
31 And the Lord said, “To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; We mourned to you, and you did not weep.’ 33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35 But wisdom is justified by all her children.”
OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
First, the miracle of Jesus raising the widow's son from the dead.
I mean you talk about the power of God manifesting, this is one of those times! The young man was already dead, in a casket and being carried to his final burial place when Jesus stopped the funeral procession. The Bible says Jesus had compassion. I think Jesus heard the Father because He said “I don't do anything unless I hear from my Father and the Father who lives in me does the works through me.” Jesus commanded the man to arise and his life returned to him and he sat up and started speaking! This act showed that God was with Jesus and caused many to believe on Jesus as the Messiah.”
Jesus said wisdom is justified by all her children.
This is a very interesting saying but what does it mean? Jesus said this in the context of explaining the ministry of John the Baptist and Himself. Multitudes believed John's message and were baptized into repentance from sin seeking to please God and be saved. However, many of the religious leaders of Jesus day known as the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected John and the message he preached to repent and refused to be baptized by him.
Then Jesus comes along preaching and teaching the gospel, doing miracles, healing the sick, raising the dead, casting out devils. Jesus is different from John. He seems to not have the same kind of aesthetic lifestyle of John the Baptist. As a matter fact, Jesus was known to have a healthy appetite and was seen many times socializing with notorious sinners. Just like the Pharisees and lawyers criticized John the Baptist they also criticized Jesus Christ and rejected his ministry as well. This is why Jesus says the men of his generation are like children in a marketplace saying ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; We mourned to you, and you did not weep.’
In other words, no matter how God manifested Himself to these people they would reject Him and the messenger and this is how it is today in our generation as well. Some people are so resistant of God that no matter how He tries to reach them by being friendly or preaching a strong message it's always the same, they're just full of criticism, unbelief and constantly point the finger at anything that has to do with God. The worse kind are the religious critics that disdain anything that looks like it's different from what they understand much like the Pharisees rejected both John the Baptist because he was radically different to his generation and Jesus approach to reaching people was different from their self righteous pseudo orthodoxy.
But Jesus said “Wisdom is justified by all her children.” Jesus was saying look, if someone is truly hearing from God and doing His work they will produce sons and daughters of God through their ministries. Remember, the Bible says that wisdom speaks and cries out. Godly ministries may use creative approaches that change from generation to generation to reach people but the message and what they produce – true children of God that are being transformed to live godly lives does not change.
WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?
1) Jesus Christ can intervene in time and space today and has authority over death. Nothing is too hard for God! The apostles also raised dead people in the book of Acts in Jesus name. When mighty miracles happen in Jesus name God is glorified!
2) Jesus was teaching that some people will reject God no matter who the messenger is or what approach he uses.
3) John the Baptist and Jesus Christ used different approaches to reach their generation but neither compromised the Word of God in the process. Both produced true believers.
4) Let wisdom be justified in your own life through your attitude, words and the good works that you do as a child of God. Jesus said let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven. In this way, wisdom is justified in your life as a believer and follower of the source of all true wisdom, God Himself!

- Both John and Jesus didn’t fit the mold of the Pharisees.
- Both had different approaches.
- Both were criticized and rejected by self-righteous legalistic leaders.
- Both produced godly followers that glorified God!
- Wisdom was justified by both John the Baptist and Jesus Christ.
