March 27 - Luke 7:36-8:3
Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. 37 And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, 38 and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, “This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.” 40 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” So he said, “Teacher, say it.” 41 “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”

And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.” 44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. 45 You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. 46 You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. 47 Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.” 48 Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” 50 Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

Chapter 8
Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city and village, preaching and bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him, 2 and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities—Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons, 3 and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others who provided for Him from their substance.

OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

In this portion of Scripture we come to understand the Gospel in very simple terms of forgiveness. Typical of Jesus, He used the circumstances that He was in to teach everyone around him spiritual truths. In this instance He was invited to a dinner at the home of a Pharisee and in walks this woman with a bad reputation and begins to cry over Jesus feet and wash His feet with her hair and anoint his head with oil. The self-righteous Pharisees began to criticize Jesus for receiving this woman. However this is a beautiful picture of the Gospel of Jesus Christ receiving sinners and forgiving them. This is why Jesus told the Pharisee that whoever is forgiven much also loves much. This woman had many sins in her past but Jesus forgave and released her from her past. The Pharisee thought he didn’t have to be forgiven of anything so he also did not show love to Jesus as the Savior.

WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?

1) Jesus loves, welcomes and forgives all sinners!

2) We don't have to wait until we’re perfect to come to Jesus. No, come just the way you are and He will receive you and forgive us and deliver us from all our sins.

3) Those that are forgiven much show they appreciate it by loving God in radical ways

Questions?
  • Do you realize your need for forgiveness?
  • Have you come to Jesus to receive that forgiveness?

The good news is Jesus is always waiting for us to come to Him because He alone has the authority to forgive sins. Let's share that good news with the world!
