March 5 - Mark 12:18-37
Then some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him; and they asked Him, saying: 19 “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies, and leaves his wife behind, and leaves no children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. 20 Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife; and dying, he left no offspring. 21 And the second took her, and he died; nor did he leave any offspring. And the third likewise. 22 So the seven had her and left no offspring. Last of all the woman died also. 23 Therefore, in the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will she be? For all seven had her as wife.” 24 Jesus answered and said to them, “Are you not therefore mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God? 25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 26 But concerning the dead, that they rise, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the burning bush passage, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? 27 He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. You are therefore greatly mistaken.”
28 Then one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, “Which is the first commandment of all?” 29 Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. 31 And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 So the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, and there is no other but He. 33 And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 Now when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” But after that no one dared question Him. 35 Then Jesus answered and said, while He taught in the temple, “How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David? 36 For David himself said by the Holy Spirit: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”’ 37 Therefore David himself calls Him ‘Lord’; how is He then his Son?” And the common people heard Him gladly.
OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
The Sadducees were a group of religious leaders in Israel that included the high priest and the chief priests. They denied the reality of an afterlife, the resurrection of the body from the dead, and the spiritual world of Angels and Demons. They thought they had a perfect argument that would discredit Jesus Christ in front of the people. Once again, Jesus turned the tables on the Sadducees. Jesus said they did not know the Scriptures meaning they did not correctly understand the Word of God and they didn't know the power of God. Jesus revealed that there would be a final resurrection of the dead but mankind would no longer be in the family system that we have on earth. Jesus said we would all be like angels of God. What does this mean? Well, it obviously means that humanity will not continue in procreation after the resurrection. Does this mean we won't recognize each other from the masculine or feminine? I don't think so. I think we will recognize each other for who we were on the earth but the difference will be that we will be in glorified bodies like Christ.
Jesus defended the teaching of the resurrection of the dead. When God spoke to Moses at the burning bush He revealed Himself as the God of Abraham the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. What Jesus was saying was even though these three men lived hundreds of years before Moses God identified Himself as their God and that they were alive in His presence while He spoke to Moses. Even though the bodies of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob had physically died their spirits were alive with God! So there is an afterlife and you don't cease to exist once your physical body dies on earth. We are able to understand this teaching clearer through what Jesus said in John 11:25-26 “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” Jesus taught that all of humanity would be raised from the dead. Some to a resurrection of life and others to a resurrection of condemnation. In other words, there would be a final judgment. According to the Bible there are only two groups at the final judgment.
Matthew 25:46 And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
John 5:28-29 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.
The Bible reveals that every person only has one life and once they die physically they will appear before God for judgment at the appointed time.
Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, 28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.
The Christian faith is not compatible with the teaching of reincarnation. Jesus Christ taught that we must be born again and that there will be a resurrection of every individual.
WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?
1. The reason people have wrong beliefs is because they don't know the Word of God and they deny the power of God.
2. According to Jesus there will be a resurrection from the dead.
3. In the afterlife humanity will not continue in procreation.
4. People don't cease to exist once their physical body dies. Their spirit lives as an eternal entity created by God.
5. The founder of Christianity, Jesus Christ, rose from the dead and we have great confidence that we have eternal life through Him.
6. There will be only two groups at the final judgment. Those that are saved and will spend eternity with God and those that have rejected Christ who'll spend an eternity in suffering for their sins because they didn't repent and receive God's love and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Jesus is the only Savior from sin. (Matthew 1:21)
7. This is why we need to preach the Gospel, the good news of God's love and salvation to every person. Because once you leave this life you don't get another chance.
