March 8 - Mark 14:1-21
After two days it was the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take Him by trickery and put Him to death. 2 But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar of the people.” 3 And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head. 4 But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, “Why was this fragrant oil wasted? 5 For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they criticized her sharply. 6 But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me. 7 For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; but Me you do not have always. 8 She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial. 9 Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”
10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Him to them. 11 And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. So he sought how he might conveniently betray Him. 12 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?” 13 And He sent out two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him. 14 Wherever he goes in, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 15 Then he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; there make ready for us.” 16 So His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover.
17 In the evening He came with the twelve. 18 Now as they sat and ate, Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you, one of you who eats with Me will betray Me.” 19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, “Is it I?” And another said, “Is it I?” 20 He answered and said to them, “It is one of the twelve, who dips with Me in the dish. 21 The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born.”
OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
Let's look at this lady that brought this alabaster box of oil and poured it on Jesus. This happened a couple times to Jesus. Once before a woman who had a bad reputation came and anointed him with oil. However, this is not the same woman. Most Bible scholars agree that this woman is Mary the sister of Martha and Lazarus. It was customary back in ancient times when guests came over to your house to greet them by putting a little dab of expensive ointment on their forehead. Mary had been listening to Jesus teachings and following Him for quite some time. She had witnessed her brother Lazarus raised from the dead by Jesus after being in the tomb four days. Mary recognized that Jesus was the Christ, the Messiah, the promised Savior of the world. She kept hearing Jesus talk about going to Jerusalem and being put to death.
So when Jesus came into this house instead of just giving him a little dab of expensive ointment she broke the box and poured it all on Him giving him the highest honor of the most precious and expensive thing that she had to offer Him. Immediately, some began to criticize what she did as a waste of money. Judas Iscariot who was the treasurer of Jesus apostolic team said the ointment should've been sold and given the poor. His motive was not that he cared for the poor but that he had control of the money and used to steal it and spend it on himself. Jesus defended Mary saying you can always give something to the poor because they will always be with you. But I'm only here with you for a little while. Leave her alone she has done a good work on me in preparation for my burial. As a matter fact Jesus said that wherever this Gospel is preached in all the world what she did for him would be remembered as a memorial to her.
Now I would like to spiritualize this story and apply it to all of our lives. Question, what's the spiritual gift that God has put into your life? That is very precious! A symbol of the Holy Spirit is oil and every Christian has at least one spiritual gift and the purpose of that gift is to build the Body of Christ, Jesus Church. 1 Corinthians 14:12 Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel. Although Jesus is not physically here His Body the Church is here on earth. My point is we should be like Mary and take the precious spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit in our lives and pour them out in service upon Jesus Body the Church today! Why? Because when you use your spiritual gifts to help build up the Church you're really pouring out oil on Jesus and God will remember you for what you've done for Him like He remembered how Mary broke her alabaster box and poured out the oil on Him.
What's the bottom line?
1) Jesus gave his best for us to save us and give us eternal life. We should also give our best to Him.
2) Let's be like Mary, who gave her most precious possession to Jesus for his purposes.
3) Spiritual gifts in our lives are like the precious oil that Mary poured on Jesus.
4) Let's pour out the oil in our lives by using our gifts to serve the Body of Christ.
5) Jesus will remember us for what we have done and your reward will be eternal!
