March 9 - Mark 14:22-52
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 23 Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many. 25 Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” 26 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 27 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 “But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.” 29 Peter said to Him, “Even if all are made to stumble, yet I will not be.” 30 Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times. 31 But he spoke more vehemently, “If I have to die with You, I will not deny You! And they all said likewise.

32 Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. 34 Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.” 35 He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. 36 And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.” 37 Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? 38 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 Again He went away and prayed, and spoke the same words. 40 And when He returned, He found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him. 41 Then He came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”

43 And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely.” 45 As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 46 Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him. 47 And one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. 48 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? 49 I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” 50 Then they all forsook Him and fled. 51 Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him, 52 and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked.

OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

Let's look at how Christ related to His Father when He prayed in the garden. Verse 36 says: And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.” Jesus called God “Abba Father”. What does this mean? "Abba" is the word framed by the lips of infants, and betokens unreasoning trust; "father" expresses an intelligent apprehension of the relationship. The two together express the love and intelligent confidence of the child. (Vines Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words Strong's number G5)

David Guzik Comments: We cry out, “Abba, Father.” It is easy for us to see Jesus relating to the Father with this joyful confidence, but we may see ourselves as disqualified for it. However, remember that we are in Christ - we have the privilege of relating to the Father even as Jesus Christ does.

i. “In the Roman world of the first century an adopted son was a son deliberately chosen by his adoptive father to perpetuate his name and inherit his estate; he was no whit inferior in status to a son born in the ordinary course of nature.” (Bruce)

ii. Under Roman adoption, the life and standing of the adopted child changed completely. The adopted son lost all rights in his old family and gained all new rights in his new family; the old life of the adopted son was completely wiped out, with all debts being canceled, with nothing from his past counting against him any more. (The Blue Letter Bible)

There are only three places in the New Testament where the word ABBA is used:
  • Our current text of Mark 14:36
  • Romans 8:15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”
  • Galatians 4:6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”

So what does this mean for us in our relationship with our heavenly Father? All of us who have received Christ as our Savior have been adopted into the family of God and now God is no longer just the Almighty God – but Abba Father. We know that He really loves us and we are now his children by faith in Jesus Christ. We no longer relate to God on the basis of condemnation with the fear of punishment. The Bible says we have not received the spirit of fear but we have been adopted and now cry out Abba father. In other words, we’re secure in our heavenly Father's love for us as His sons and daughters in Christ Jesus. Some of us come to Christ with all kinds of roots of rejection and emotional pain and false images of the Father in our minds because of a bad relationship with an earthly father or step-father. God wants to transform your mind and heart by the Holy Spirit and His Word so you’re able to cry out freely, “Abba Father”.

The Bible says in 1 John chapter 4:17-19 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love Him because He first loved us.

He that fears is not made perfect in love because fear involves torment. God wants to remove that kind of fear completely out of your heart and replace it with His love and Spirit that cries out Abba father, I love you God and I trust in your love for me and that I’m saved! When we are born again by the Spirit of God the Holy Spirit helps us to pray in such a way that we cry out to our heavenly Father Abba Father. Life is full of choices and Christian’s need to make the right choice based on the will of God similar to the sufferings of Christ before he went to the cross. I'm not talking about adding to the redemptive work of Jesus Christ on the cross.

No, but the suffering that is involved in coming to make final decisions about what's right and wrong in our lives as we struggle with these issues in prayer. This is where the help of the Holy Spirit comes in and we're able to cry out Abba Father not my will but your will be done and make the right choices to further God’s purpose and plan for our lives. Just as the father empowered His Son, Jesus Christ to go through with His plans according to his purpose so likewise the Holy Spirit empowers us as we cry out Abba Father asking for His help. I believe this is part of the meaning of Romans 8:26 where the Bible says that the Holy Spirit helps us to pray…

WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?

1) Christianity is unique compared with all world religions in that individuals are adopted into the spiritual family of God through faith in Jesus Christ.

2) Believers relate to God in a very intimate way as we cry out Abba Father with the help of the Holy Spirit.

3) We are delivered from a spirit of bondage and fear. Our relationship with our heavenly Father is based on the grace of Jesus Christ not our own self works to be accepted.

4) The Holy Spirit helps us to pray. He produces within us the freedom and confidence to cry out Abba Father!!! This is especially true when we struggle in prayer to make the right choices to please God and do His will for our lives.

5) No matter what relationship you have had with your earthly father determine that you will not be controlled by past experiences that would dictate how you relate to your heavenly Father now but allow the Holy Spirit to set you free from all fear, false images about God and unbelief in His love for you.

6) Learn to cry out Abba father and receive your heavenly Father's great love for you daily!
