May 1 - John 1:29-51
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ 31 I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.” 32 And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. 36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour). 40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, A Stone).
43 The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
Today let's look at the threefold witness of John the Baptist concerning Jesus Christ.
Witness 1 – Jesus the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world
The first thing John said about Jesus was that he was the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. The reason this is the first thing that John said about Jesus is because of its importance, salvation! The very first thing every person needs to understand about Jesus Christ is that he is the Savior of the world and the only one that God sent to pay the price for our sins by his own death and blood on the cross. Jesus fulfilled the types of all the Old Testament sacrifices when he offered up his own body and poured out his own blood on the cross. Now through faith in Jesus Christ every person can be saved and know that their sins have been washed away through the blood of Jesus Christ!
Witness 2 – Jesus baptizes in the Holy Spirit
The second thing John said about Jesus was that he saw the Holy Spirit descend upon him in the form of a dove. John said, Jesus was the one that would baptize people in the Holy Spirit! This is the second revelation that John the Baptist declared about Jesus Christ. Being baptized with the Holy Spirit is typically also the second phase of a person's walk with God. First people come to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ and then they receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised that he would send the Holy Spirit upon his disciples. This happened on the day of Pentecost. You can read about this in the book of Acts chapter 2. When a person gets saved they receive the Spirit of Christ by being born again. Read John 3:6, Romans 8:9. However, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is typically a separate spiritual experience. This is what we find in the book of Acts in chapters 8, 10, 19 teaching that believers received the baptism of the Holy Spirit after believing on Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Witness 3 – Jesus as the Son of God
The third revelation that John the Baptist had about Jesus Christ is that he was the Son of God. This is foundational to our faith. God promised that he would send his Son as the Savior of the world throughout the Old Testament starting in the book of Genesis chapter 3 referring to Jesus as the Seed of the woman that would bruise the head of the serpent or break Satan’s power over mankind. Bible Scholars say that there are over 300 prophecies written in the Old Testament which were fulfilled in the life of Jesus Christ as the Son of God, the Messiah. Believing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God is vitally important to our salvation. The Bible says in John 3:36 “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?
Answer these Questions for yourself:
1) Do you believe Jesus is the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world?
2) Have you received the baptism in the Holy Spirit since becoming a believer in Jesus?
3) Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God, the one promised in the Old Testament by the prophets or are you still looking for another Messiah to come?
