May 14 - John 8:1-20
But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Now early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and He sat down and taught them. 3 Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, 4 they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?” 6 This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear.

7 So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” 8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” 12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

13 The Pharisees therefore said to Him, “You bear witness of Yourself; Your witness is not true.” 14 Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from and where I am going. 15 You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. 16 And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me. 17 It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true. 18 I am One who bears witness of Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me.” 19 Then they said to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.” 20 These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one laid hands on Him, for His hour had not yet come.

OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

Let's look at the story of the woman caught in adultery. I can tell you right now this truth is going to set some of you listening today free! The Pharisees and Scribes brought her before Jesus. The woman was caught in the act of adultery. Exodus 20:14 says “You shall not commit adultery.” This was the 7th commandment given by God to Moses. The woman was obviously guilty as charged but I also want to know how come the man was not brought to Jesus? It seems to me that this was entrapment to accuse Jesus of not following the law.

The Bible says Jesus acted like he didn't even hear what they were saying as he wrote in the dust. What was Jesus writing? I believe He was writing the names of the women that the men bringing the accusation had secretly committed adultery with. Why? Because God knows everything and the Father was revealing to His Son the sins of the men standing before Him and He was ready to confront them if necessary. They were hypocrites! They lived secret lives of sin and were pointing the finger at this woman. Remember, whenever you point a finger at someone you have three pointing back at yourself!

Jesus finally stood up and said he that is without sin among you let him be the first to cast a stone at her. Wow, reality check! Just imagine this angry mob of people and a group of men standing around this woman with rocks in their hands lifted up ready to throw at her to crush her bones, body and skull to death, suddenly dropping all the rocks and walking off as quickly as possible. Jesus literally saved her from the judgment of death by stoning. When they all left, Jesus stood up and asked the woman, "Has no man condemned you?" The woman answered and said "No one Lord." Here the woman acknowledges Jesus as the Messiah, calling Him Lord.

The next thing that Jesus said to her are some of the most powerful words ever spoken from His mouth. He said neither do I condemn you go and sin no more. What does this mean? That Jesus is offering forgiveness to everyone who calls on Him as Lord. This is what is promised in Acts 2:21 “Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” The Bible says this is why Jesus came from heaven to earth to save humanity not to condemn people. John 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

When Jesus said to the woman go and sin no more He was essentially saying; Lady I forgive all of your sins and today is the time to start brand-new. Your slate is clean. From this time forward make a decision to leave your life of sin. Repentance is what Jesus had preached from the beginning. Turning away from sin and living for God. And this is what God offers sinners through the preaching and teaching of the Gospel of His Son Jesus Christ; forgiveness of all of our sins and a new life of freedom through faith in Jesus Christ as Lord!

WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?

1. Be careful not to be among those that condemn and accuse others because everyone has sinned and come short of the glory of God! (Ref; Romans 3:23)

2. The heart of God for sinners is to forgive, restore and set them free from the bondage of sin. (Ref; Luke 15)

3. After we receive forgiveness we need to make a decision every day that were not going to live in sin. This is true repentance that restores us to fellowship with God. (Ref; Luke 13)

4. As a born-again Christians all of our past sins are washed away by the blood of Jesus Christ and we are free from condemnation in Christ. We can live free from sin abiding in Christ, His Word and the power of the Holy Spirit! (Ref; Ephesians 1:7, John 8:31-36, Romans 8)

5. As a Christian if you sin don't run from God run to him. The same mercy and grace that saved us the day we accepted Christ continues to cleanse and forgive us of all sin. This promise is found in 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
