May 15 - John 8:21-30
Then Jesus said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come.” 22 So the Jews said, “Will He kill Himself, because He says, ‘Where I go you cannot come’?” 23 And He said to them, “You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” 25 Then they said to Him, “Who are You?” And Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning. 26 I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I heard from Him.” 27 They did not understand that He spoke to them of the Father. 28 Then Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things. 29 And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.” 30 As He spoke these words, many believed in Him.
OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
Jesus said He always did things that pleased His Father. We know that the Father was pleased with His Son Jesus before He ever preached one message or did a miracle because the Bible says so. Remember what God said about Jesus at His baptism in the Jordan river?
Matthew 3:16-17 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Hearing God say He is pleased with you is the highest affirmation anyone could receive! What are some of the things that pleased the Father that Jesus did?
Faith
Jesus lived by faith in God His Father. This is what He taught His disciples and this is one of the ways we learn to please God. Believing in God’s goodness, power and promises! Jesus learned to trust in His Father from his mothers womb.
Psalm 22:10 I was cast upon You from birth. From My mother’s womb You have been My God.
Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
We know that Jesus sought God in prayer and the Father rewarded Him constantly!
Obedience
Hebrews 5:8 Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. What does this mean? That Jesus chose to obey God over His own will. He remained obedient while being tempted by Satan in the wilderness just before moving into His public ministry. Jesus didn’t cave in and go the easy way of Satan. He lived a life of perfect obedience and this pleased His Father greatly. Jesus became the perfect sacrifice through His obedience. A Christianity that does not lead people to obey God is a false Christianity called Lawlessness.
Doing the will of God
The Bible says it was prophesied of Jesus coming to do the will of God. Psalm 40:7-8 Then I said, “Behold, I come; In the scroll of the book it is written of me. I delight to do Your will, O my God, and Your law is within my heart.” This is also what Jesus said concerning His own purpose in coming to earth:
John 6:38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. We know what the will of the Father is when we look at Jesus because He lived to do His will.
· Jesus preached the Gospel
· Taught the Word of God
· Healed the sick
· Loved and restored sinners
· He met the needs of people
WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?
God sent His Son Jesus not only to save us from our sins but also to give an example of how to live to please our Heavenly Father. Some teach that this is just simply impossible and dismiss the idea of attaining a life like Jesus lived. However, the Bible teaches us that Christian’s are to grow up into the fullness of life in Christ.
Ephesians 4:13 Till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
The way to please the Father is to become like Jesus and it starts with a choice to make Jesus Lord. After we are saved, we then begin a lifetime journey of transformation becoming more and more like Jesus in the same area’s He developed as a person in relationship with His Father in:
· Faith
· Obedience
· Doing the will of the Father
Be patient with yourself and just keep going. Remember, just like it takes time to grow naturally it likewise takes time to grow spiritually. Be assured that every step you take to please your Heavenly Father brings great joy to Him just like a toddler when taking his or her first steps. Keep getting back up every time you fall down and soon you will be walking strong bringing glory God in all you do!
