May 18 - John 10:1-21
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them. 7 Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 12 But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. 13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. 15 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd. 17 “Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. 18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.” 19 Therefore there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings. 20 And many of them said, “He has a demon and is mad. Why do you listen to Him?” 21 Others said, “These are not the words of one who has a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

In this section of John's Gospel Jesus is revealed as the door of salvation and the good shepherd of the sheep. When Jesus said I am the door He was saying I am the only way to be saved. He says many came before Him but they were thieves and robbers. Today we can say that many have come after Jesus presenting themselves as prophets from God but when they don't point people to Jesus Christ they show that there are false spiritual leaders. The good news is that the door has been opened through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ for everyone to enter in by faith and receive God's free gift of salvation. We find in these Scriptures one of the most important truths of the Bible. I'm talking about the nature of God and the nature of the Devil being revealed. In John 10:10 Jesus said “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

In other words, Jesus was saying the thief, referring to the Devil or Satan is the one that comes against humanity to steal to kill and to destroy people's lives. On the other hand, Jesus said that I have come that people might have life and life to the fullest or the abundant life! You know when God created Adam and Eve in the beginning there was total abundance in the Garden of Eden. It was only after they sinned that they forfeited God's best blessings. Today, through Jesus we can be not only forgiven but restored to the abundant kind of life God originally intended us to enjoy. However, if you don’t believe this as a Christian, you will settle for an attitude of poverty or that God doesn’t want you to prosper.

Today there is an attack on the character of God that has its origins in the twisted diabolical accusations of the evil one. These insinuations against God are all over the place and commonly accepted in men's minds. Even insurance agencies call tragedies “An act of God” But are all natural disasters and calamities really the work of God? Everyday people believe that God is punishing them with sickness, disease, poverty, abuse and all kinds of suffering and death. Well, according to Jesus He came to bring us life and blessing but the devil comes against our lives to kill, steal and to destroy. This is something that Job had to learn as well. When he went through his trials he lost his health, his wealth and even family members to death. He thought God was punishing him. Others accused him of having some secret sin in his life. However, in the end of the book of Job he comes to understand that he was wrong. God ended up giving him double for all his trouble. The Word of God reveals that Satan was the source of all of this trouble from the beginning not God.

Jesus said I am the good shepherd and my sheep hear my voice and follow me. Friends, understand that God wants to bless you and He's given Jesus Christ as our good shepherd. The Bible doesn't say He's our bad shepherd. No, Jesus is our good shepherd. This means He's for us and not against us. He cares for every person and loves each one greatly. He views our lives just like a shepherd would view his sheep with a caring eye. He wants to direct us into His perfect will and plans and this includes an abundant life!

WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?

1) Jesus said I am the door and that means He alone can save us from our sins

2) How do you make sure that you are inside the door of salvation? Repent from sin and believe on Jesus Christ confessing Him as Lord and Savior. Luke 13:5, Romans 10:9-10, 13

3) All that came before Jesus and all that follow after him declaring that they are the way of salvation are false prophets.

4) Jesus revealed the nature of God as being good wanting to provide the abundant life for His children and Satan as the source of theft, destruction and death.

5) Jesus said I am the good shepherd not the bad shepherd. Learn to hear His voice and He will lead you into His perfect will and provision because He is a good shepherd and only wants the best for all of us His children.
