May 2 - John 2:1-25
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” 4 Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” 6 Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. 9 When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. 10 And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!” 11 This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him. 12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples; and they did not stay there many days.
13 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. 15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. 16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” 17 Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.” 18 So the Jews answered and said to Him, “What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?” 19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 22 Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said. 23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did. 24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.
OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
The Holy Spirit inspired the Apostle John to write his gospel to record the life, ministry and miracles of Jesus Christ. Remember, John was one of the original twelve apostles and he was an eyewitness to what he wrote. Near the end of his gospel, John emphasizes the purpose of his Gospel, the recording of seven mighty miracles of Jesus Christ so that as people read their faith would grow to believe on Jesus Christ to everlasting life as the Son of God and Savior of the world:
John 20:30-31 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
As we go through the Gospel of John we will learn about all of these miracles that Jesus did and your faith will grow! This is because the Bible teaches in Romans 10:17 that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. In this passage of Scripture we see the first miracle that Jesus performed turning water into wine. Jesus and his disciples were invited to a wedding. Suddenly, they ran out of wine! Now this was really big deal because to run out of wine at a wedding celebration was totally unacceptable socially and would bring shame on the bridegroom. Mary, Jesus mother went to him and said; “they have no wine”. Jesus answered her and said my hour has not yet come. In other words, Mother, this is not my problem and it's not the right time for me to do a miracle.
However, we need to understand something very powerful here. Even though Jesus said it's not my problem nor is it the right time for me to do a miracle yet because Mary asked Jesus to supply this need with total faith that He could do it, He followed through and granted her request! Did Jesus turn the water into wine simply because His mother, Mary asked? I don't think so. I think it is because Mary had a revelation that her Son Jesus was in fact the promised Messiah and that he had the creative power of God within him to do anything. She put a demand by faith upon Jesus power and I believe it moved Jesus to perform a miracle.
Remember the story of the woman that had the issue of blood? How she pressed through the crowd believing that if she just touched the hem of Jesus garment she would be healed? She put a demand by faith upon the Son of God and when she touched the hem of his garment power went out of him and she received an instant miracle of healing! As a matter of fact, the Bible says Jesus stopped and asked; “Who touched Me”, because he perceived that power or virtue went out of him. What did Jesus say to her? He said daughter be of good cheer your faith has made you whole go in peace.
The Bible says that Jesus turned the natural water that was set aside for washing utensils into the best wine people had ever tasted in their lives. This was a miracle that just blew the minds of His disciples. This first miracle manifested His glory as the Son of God and part of the Trinity that was with the Father and Holy Spirit in the beginning creating the universe. In this moment of time and space, at a wedding in Cana of Galilee, the Creator, God in the flesh through Jesus Christ manifested His goodness by meeting a need. The Bible says His disciples believed on Him because of this mighty miracle.
WHATS THE BOTTOM LINE?
1) The Gospel of John records several mighty miracles that Jesus Christ did.
2) These miracles reveal that Jesus is the Son of God.
3) God manifested His goodness to humanity through these miracles.
4) Faith filled prayers in Jesus name, can cause the power of God to manifest anywhere to meet a need no matter how great because nothing is to hard for the Lord!
