May 25 - John 14:15-31
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. 19 “A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. 20 At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 28 You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I. 29 “And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me. 31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.

OKAY, HERE'S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

God coming to live in us?

Yes, this is what Jesus promised His disciples would experience but how?

Jesus said that he was going to send the Holy Spirit to live permanently inside his disciples. When Jesus spoke these words he mentioned that the Holy Spirit was with them but shortly he would be in them to lead them into all truths and be their helper. In the Old Testament, the anointing of the Holy Spirit came primarily upon the Prophet, the Priest and the King. However, in the New Testament the Holy Spirit is available to not only come upon all Christians but actually live inside every believer. This is the first way that God lives in us today.

Jesus taught his disciples that He would both manifest Himself and that He and the Father God would come to live inside His disciples if they loved God and kept His commandments. This means that we acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord and that He is the one that we obey.  For true Christians, Jesus teachings are more than just words written on paper and some religious book called the Bible. No, they are life and guide our thinking, understanding, behavior and lifestyle. True Christians are those that embrace Jesus Christ as Lord and apply His teachings into their lives and are transformed into His likeness. This is possible because the Word of God is alive and powerful. So God comes to live in us as we keep His commandments and obey His Word.

This is true Christianity! Our God living in us and us in Him! This is one of the great differences between Christianity and all other world religions. The apostle Paul writes in Colossians 2:10  And you are in Him, made full and having come to fullness of life [in Christ you too are filled with the Godhead—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—and reach full spiritual stature]… Amplified version

What’s the Bottom Line?

1. Jesus Christ brought to us a closer relationship with God.

2. In the Old Testament God was understood as being out there somewhere manifesting his presence periodically among his people and living in the holy of holies behind the veil of the temple which only the high priest had access to once a year.

3. Now in the New Testament, God lives inside his people through the Holy Spirit and our obedience to the Word of God.

4. Jesus said that both He and the Father would come to live inside of Christians that obey his commandments and keep His word.

5. It's this living relationship with the Trinity, the father, the Son and the Holy Spirit that sets Christianity completely apart from all other world religions in that we have a family relationship with the creator God living inside us.

Self-evaluation Questions?
  • Is your Christian experience merely one of God somewhere out in the universe on a throne in heaven? Of course God is on the throne in heaven but according to Jesus you can experience the Triune God living inside you.
  • Do you experience His presence living inside of you daily?
  • Take just a moment to worship and praise Him who lives both on the throne and on the throne of your heart, Father Son and Holy Spirit!
