November 13 – Hebrews 11:17-31
By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 of whom it was said, “In Isaac your seed shall be called,” 19 concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense. 20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come. 21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff. 22 By faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel, and gave instructions concerning his bones.
23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s command. 24 By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, 26 esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward. 27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the firstborn should touch them. 29 By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so, were drowned. 30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days. 31 By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe, when she had received the spies with peace.
OKAY, HERE’S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
In this portion of scripture we see several of these examples of people that lived and died in faith. Abrahams faith in God’s promise that his son Isaac would be his heir caused him to believe the word of God and offer him up as a sacrifice because he had faith that no matter what God would fulfill his word. Abraham obeyed God and the Lord saw his faith and kept him from offering up his son Isaac and provided in his place a ram for a sacrifice. Abraham looked forward to the future by faith in God and trusted him even though he did not understand fully what God had asked him to do.
This is the same kind of faith that both Isaac and Jacob showed by blessing their sons concerning things that would come to pass for their individual lives. They released by faith and prayer blessings over their children based on what God had shown them concerning the future. God had revealed to Joseph that the children of Israel would not remain in Egypt forever and by faith he gave them instructions to take his bones with them out of that land and bury him in the promised land. God revealed himself to Moses and called him to be the deliverer of the children of Israel from Pharaoh and the land of Egypt. Moses walked by faith through this whole journey and trusted in God as the Scripture says to even split the Red Sea! The entire nation escaped the Egyptian army as they followed the faith of Moses as God manifested his mighty power dividing the Red Sea. When the children of Israel confronted the city of Jericho it looked impossible for them to capture this mighty fortified city. However they trusted in God and obeyed the instructions of the Lord. He caused the walls of the city of Jericho to fall by His mighty power and the children of Israel defeated their enemies and possessed the land. That’s the power of faith! Jesus said that nothing is impossible to him who believes, even moving a mountain by faith. He demonstrated living by faith while on earth advancing the Kingdom of God.
