November 6 – Hebrews 7:18-28
For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness, 19 for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God. 20 And inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath 21 (for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him: “The Lord has sworn And will not relent, ‘You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek’”), 22 by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant. 23 Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing.
24 But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. 26 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.
OKAY, HERE’S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
Paul continues his comparison between the Old Covenant Priesthood and Jesus Christ our eternal High Priest. While it is absolutely true that no matter where we come from or how bad a person seems to be lost in sin the Bible teaches us that Jesus Christ can and will save the worst of sinners that calls on him. However, in Hebrews 7:25 where it says that Jesus is ABLE to SAVE to the UTTERMOST those that come to God through him…it doesn’t say from the uttermost but to the uttermost. This was a revelation to me because I have always read that verse with the idea that it meant the former that Jesus can save anyone no matter how far away from God they are but that’s not what it means.
To correctly understand the meaning of this verse we need to do a quick word study. The word UTTERMOST actually means Completely, Perfectly or Utterly. The Amplified Bible brings out this mean, it reads: “Therefore He is able also to save forever (completely, perfectly, for eternity) those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede and intervene on their behalf [with God].” This same idea of Jesus completely and perfectly saving us for all eternity is also written in
Philippians 1:6 Amplified Bible reads…He who has begun a good work in you will [continue to] perfect and complete it until the day of Christ Jesus [the time of His return]. So now we begin to get the sense of what is being promised not that Jesus can save the worst of sinners which he certainly can and does but that when he saves us he himself will make sure that the work of his redemption in our lives is fully realized and fulfilled until we stand before him for eternity! Now that is having a friend in Jesus, I mean he’s going to stick with us through thick and thin all the way to glory, praise the Lord, he is a merciful and faithful High Priest to us!
In this sense, Jesus is committed to continue his work within each of us and complete what he started from the day we said yes to Jesus as Lord and were born again until we enter his presence in Heaven! One of the best examples of Jesus continual intercession and prayers for us is seen just before Peter denied that he knew him three times. Luke 22:31-32 And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.” The Lord knew Peter was about to stumble and he also knows when each of us slips and falls as well but through the Lords mighty intercession we can be assured that we will be restored just like the apostle Peter was restored to his relationship with Jesus and the ministry God had called him to fulfill. That’s complete and perfect salvation and restoration!
WHAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE?
1) Jesus not only saves us from the uttermost place of sin but he saves us to the uttermost, complete and perfect salvation for all eternity!
2) We’re all going to sin from time to time and when we do we need to go to Jesus our High Priest and receive cleansing and forgiveness through him alone.
3) Just like Jesus prayed and interceded for Peter he also prays for you and I and it’s his amazing power and grace that lifts us up to walk in his victory now and forever.
