October 1 – Philippians 2:19-3:3
But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, that I also may be encouraged when I know your state. 20 For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state. 21 For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus. 22 But you know his proven character, that as a son with his father he served with me in the gospel. 23 Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see how it goes with me. 24 But I trust in the Lord that I myself shall also come shortly.
25 Yet I considered it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, and fellow soldier, but your messenger and the one who ministered to my need; 26 since he was longing for you all, and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick. 27 For indeed he was sick almost unto death; but God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. 28 Therefore I sent him the more eagerly, that when you see him again you may rejoice, and I may be less sorrowful. 29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness, and hold such men in esteem; 30 because for the work of Christ he came close to death, not regarding his life, to supply what was lacking in your service toward me.
Chapter 3 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. For me to write the same things to you is not tedious, but for you it is safe. 2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation! 3 For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
OKAY, HERE’S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
In this portion of scripture Paul writes to the Philippians letting them know his great concern for them and how he desires to send two of his coworkers to see how they’re doing and let them know what’s happening with him in prison. Paul recruited Timothy to go with him on his first missionary journey because he was well reported of by the brothers, he had a great reputation as a believer in Christ and he showed a desire to serve the Lord. Timothy turned out to be a very eager young learner that the apostle Paul was able to mentor and develop into a faithful Christian leader that greatly helped Paul and became the pastor of the church at Ephesus. Paul says that he has no one that he can send that he trusts more than Timothy because he has proven himself as a son with the father in the ministry of the gospel. He says there are many seeking their own and not the things of Jesus Christ in other words there were a lot of ministers and workers out there but they were either in it for the money or self-glory but this wasn't the case with Timothy he had a pure heart for God and cared for God’s people.
Next Paul talks about Epaphroditus, who was originally from Philippi and he had travelled to Rome to help take care of Paul while he was suffering in prison. It appears that Epaphroditus became very sick and almost died because of a severe illness but God had mercy on him and brought a total healing to him. Paul said of Epaphroditus that he was willing to risk his own life for the call of Christ and that the church should receive him and hold him in honor because he was a faithful servant of Christ. Paul was in the habit of discipling and mentoring other young leaders and that’s what we should do today as well. Everyone should have a Paul or a spiritual father in their life that they can receive from and a Timothy that they can pour their own life into to help develop as a leader. This takes a lot of love and patience. Someone asked leadership expert John Maxwell are leaders born or made? Well of course all leaders are born but they also are made and that’s where mentorship comes in. Leadership is both taught and caught by the kind of examples that we surround ourselves with. This is why it is vitally important that you follow leaders that you see Jesus Christ living through in both character and actions.
Paul concludes this portion of his letter by encouraging them to rejoice in the Lord always and emphasizes this saying twice, again I say rejoice! Why did he say this? Because legalistic Judaizers were going around preaching another gospel and trying to bring people under the bondage of the Mosaic law which produced no joy but rather condemnation! The true gospel will produce the joy of the Lord in our spirit and liberate us to walk in freedom with our heavenly Father. This is also why Paul says beware of dogs, beware of the concision or the Judaizers and be aware of evil workers. There are all kinds of preachers out there declaring messages but the most important message that can be preached is true faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and the gospel of the grace of God. Today, we also need to be aware of evil workers and false ministers that would pervert the true gospel of Jesus Christ.
WHAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE?
1) Paul was suffering in prison but wanted to send both Timothy and Epaphroditus.
2) You have to reproduce yourself into others to multiply your leadership.
3) Everyone should have a Paul and Timothy in their lives. Who are you receiving from and who are you mentoring right now?
4) The true gospel of Jesus Christ will cause us to rejoice but false gospel will bring people into bondage and there will be no joy in their lives.
5) Rejoice in the Lord always because our salvation is the most important thing and it’s already been paid for through Jesus Christ!
