October 16 – 1 Timothy 1
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope, 2 To Timothy, a true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. 3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia—remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, 4 nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. 5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith, 6 from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm.

8 But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, 9 knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, 11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust.

12
And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, 13 although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 14 And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. 16 However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life. 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. 18 This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, 20 of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.

OKAY, HERE’S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

1 Timothy is a personal letter to Timothy from the Apostle Paul who he recruited on his first missionary journey. Timothy was already a believer in Christ when Paul met him and he had developed a very good reputation among the Christians in his town. Timothy felt the call of God to the ministry so he was a perfect candidate for Paul to mentor. He had a believing Jewish mother and grandmother along with a solid foundation in the Old Testament Scriptures. His father was a Greek so he was familiar with both Jewish and Greek history and culture. Through his association with the Apostle Paul he grew beyond being an apprentice minister into a spiritual son that became very dear to Paul. The city of Ephesus was Timothy’s first pastoral appointment. Paul planted this church and a mighty Spiritual outpouring brought into the church a multitude of new converts. Paul had no one he trusted more to oversee the growth of this new church like Timothy. It’s for this reason that Paul had left Timothy in Ephesus because he knew this church needed the ministry of a Pastor. Timothy carried in him the very heartbeat of Paul and was fully educated in the teachings of the Gospel that Paul preached and was himself an able teacher and preacher of the word of God.

It’s in this context that Paul writes to Timothy to provide personal encouragement to a young pastor to keep advancing according to the call of God on his life. In his letter, Paul provides Timothy with timeless advice and counsel on the priorities and spiritual disciplines for ministers of the gospel. Paul also writes giving practical instructions on:

  • Correcting false teachings
  • Leading the church in corporate prayers
  • How Christians should conduct themselves in the Church and society
  • Qualifications for Elders and Deacons
  • The divine mystery of godliness and great apostasy to come
  • Instructions on the care widows
  • Pastoral compensation and discipline
  • Guarding the good confession of faith in Christ
  • The folly of pursuing riches and Kingdom attitudes about money.

In chapter 1 Paul reminds Timothy of his own call to the ministry by Jesus Christ. He wanted Timothy to understand that if Jesus could save, call and empower him “the chief of sinners” then there was hope for all sinners to be saved as well. He emphasizes that the main purpose of Christ coming into the world was to save sinners. Paul said that the Lord was using his life as a pattern or example of how merciful and patient the Lord is with all men. He recalls to Timothy the prophecies that were spoken over him at his ordination to encourage him and affirm him as a God called minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I think it is a great blessing when spiritual fathers speak into our lives to bring a word of affirmation concerning our calling in ministry. At this point, Timothy probably needed this kind of affirmation because he was a new pastor in a very hostile environment with all kinds of contradictory forces and false teachers seeking to undermine him and discredit his ministry.

When God has calls us to the ministry we need to be very courageous and not cave in or give up when pressure comes against us and especially the attacks of the devil. What has God called you to do for him? Have there been any specific prophecies concerning your ministry? If you need to be Ordained and want my ministerial counsel I will be glad to help you pursue the call of God and develop the ministry God has called you to. Take ahold of the things that you are convinced of in your spirit and find your strength in the Lord as you wait upon him he will confirm your call to the ministry by the fruit produced through your preaching and teaching so never give up!

WHAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE?

1) 1 Timothy was written by the Apostle Paul to his spiritual son Timothy.

2) It’s a personal letter that brought great encouragement to Timothy.

3) Timothy was a new pastor that would need to confront false teachings and bring correction.

4) Paul uses his own example as a pattern to remember that the Lord can save anybody and call them into His service.

5) Paul provides plenty of instruction for him to organize and lead the church which can be wisely and prayerfully applied today because they are Biblical principles not changing fades.

6) Paul reminds Timothy of the prophecies he received at his ordination and affirms his divine call to the ministry.
