October 23 – 2 Timothy 2:1-21
You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 3 You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. 5 And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. 6 The hardworking farmer must be first to partake of the crops. 7 Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things. 8 Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel, 9 for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

11 This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, We shall also live with Him. 12 If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. 13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.
14 Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers. 15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. 17 And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, 18 who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. 19 Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” 20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. 21 Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.

OKAY, HERE’S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

In this portion of Paul’s letter to Timothy he begins by saying be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. Let me tell you that if you’re called to be involved in the ministry and I believe that every Christian is called to serve the Lord in different capacities you’re going to need the grace of God to help you do what he is called you to do! Paul is talking about the kind of grace that produces the strength and ability that comes to us spiritually from the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit will empower you to do the works of Jesus Christ and that is the grace of God flowing through you as you preach, teach, minister and serve others in Jesus name. Here are some areas that I know is a pastor and missionary I have needed special grace to help me as an ambassador of Christ:

  • Preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ with the anointing of the Holy Spirit
  • The study, preparation and teaching the word of God
  • Hearing God to give fresh prophetic words in worship services
  • Discipling and training other leaders
  • Giving spiritual guidance to people in their time of need
  • Ministering to people suffering in the hospital
  • Comforting those that have lost loved ones through conducting funerals

The Holy Spirit will give us grace to do everything he has called us to do and we get that special grace by being in Christ Jesus and releasing our faith in him, especially through prayer asking the Lord to empower us as we wait upon him. I love the promise of Isaiah 40:31 that says they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength they shall mount up with wings as eagles they shall run and not grow weary they shall walk and not faint.

Next Paul focuses in on one of the primary tasks that Timothy is to perform as a minister of Christ which is the preparation of other qualified teachers of the word of God. The Amplified version really brings out the sense of the meaning in verses 1-2: So you, my son, be strong [constantly strengthened] and empowered in the grace that is [to be found only] in Christ Jesus. 2 The things [the doctrine, the precepts, the admonitions, the sum of my ministry] which you have heard me teach in the presence of many witnesses, entrust [as a treasure] to reliable and faithful men who will also be capable and qualified to teach others.

Here we see five generations of spiritual leaders being multiplied: Jesus, Paul, Timothy, faithful men, and others. Question? Who is your Paul or your Mentor? Who is your Timothy? Who are you teaching to develop as a disciple, teacher or preacher? The Lord Jesus Christ called 12 men to follow him whom he named apostles. His goal was to develop them as the future leaders of the church and to reproduce his ministry through them. Mark 3:14 Amplified And He appointed twelve [disciples], so that they would be with Him [for instruction] and so that He could send them out to preach [the gospel as apostles—that is, as His special messengers, personally chosen representatives].

The greatest work that Jesus Christ ever did was die on the cross to bring forgiveness and salvation to the world. The second greatest work that Jesus did was prepare the 12 apostles to continue his ministry after his resurrection! Just before Christ returned to the father in heaven that sent him, he gave the apostles the great commission to go into all the world and preach the gospel, baptize new believers, cast out devils and heal the sick in his name. He specifically commanded the apostles to teach the very same things that he taught while on earth. Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

The apostle Paul was following in the steps of the master. He knew that if the Christian faith and the church were to survive it would depend on developing capable spiritual leaders fully trained to preach and teach the word of God. This is why he was instructing Timothy to also develop future leaders. This task was of the highest importance and priority to complete. The apostle Paul had this goal in mind throughout his entire ministry and had already trained Timothy and was using him to teach others wherever Paul sent him. 1 Corinthians 4:17 For this reason I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church.

This is why those called must be prepared and sent into ministry. One of my favorite sayings is “Never go into ministry, always grow into ministry.” Preachers and teachers must be trained. This is a work that I am giving my life to see fulfilled based on the word of God and a vision that I received of multiplying the army of God. The calling of God has led me to Bible School, Language School, serving as a missionary living overseas in Dominican Republic and Singapore. I have invested countless hours putting together the One Year Bible Club to teach through the New Testament and I wrote a book called “Developing the Preacher within you” available on Amazon My wife Yngris and I established Diamond Institute to equip and train leaders providing ordination and ministry credentials for those pursuing the call of God. My first online course is called “The Church Assimilation Course” in it teach everything I know about assimilating believers in to the life and ministry of the local church. With the Lord’s help I will create more teaching and training courses for preachers and teachers because the equipping of future Christian soldiers is what I’m called to do.

WHAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE?

1) The Lord will empower you with his special grace to do all that he is called you to do.

2) Paul instructed Timothy to develop and train future leaders.

3) The training of teachers and preachers is necessary to grow the church.

4) Who is your Paul? Who do you receive training from?

5) Who is your Timothy? Who are you developing and reproducing your ministry into?
