October 24 – 2 Timothy 2:22-3:17
Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23 But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife. 24 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25 in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, 26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
3 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! 6 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, 7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith; 9 but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, as theirs also was.
10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, 11 persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra—what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
OKAY, HERE’S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
First, Paul warns Timothy about entering into contentious quarrels with people about the truth and encourages him to keep in control of himself when he’s talking with hotheaded fools. You never win people to Christ by raising your voice higher arguing over a point of doctrine so it’s better to keep your cool and go as far as someone will allow you to go if you can carry a discussion with civility. We absolutely must rely upon the convicting and revealing work of the Holy Spirit when we are engaged with people talking about the gospel of Jesus Christ. Only God can open the eyes of deceived spiritually blind sinners to cause them to see the truth of their condition and need of salvation in Jesus Christ.
Paul’s words paint for Timothy a picture of the condition of humanity and what he’s up against as a minister of the gospel. The backdrop of this painting is full of corruption detailing the sinful realities that the last days brings upon the earth but right in the middle of this swamp of moral decay and deception is seen the incorruptible solid foundation of the Word of God. It’s as if all of humanity is sinking deeper and deeper in the quicksand of sin and the only thing that is not sinking is the word of God. For this reason Paul reminds Timothy that from his childhood he has known the holy Scriptures which are able to make him wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
Then Paul makes one of the most awesome declarations of his entire letter saying that ALL SCRIPTURE IS INSPIRED BY GOD and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. The day after I was saved back in 1982 I picked up a Bible and began to read it. I could not put it down and I quickly realized that the Bible was no ordinary book but a divine book of supernatural revelation revealing God and I could hear him speaking to me through it. Ministers of the Gospel must come to a place of conviction and faith believing that the Bible is the inspired word of God. The word of God is the only thing on this planet that has the power to transform sinners in to saints.
There was a time in the life of the famous Evangelist Billy Graham when he was in a battle in his mind concerning the inspiration of the word of God. There were many modern day scholars that were claiming that only parts of the Bible were inspired while other parts were not. Billy Graham took his Bible and went out into the woods to pray and came to the conclusion that it was a choice that he would have to make. He decided that the Bible was in fact the inspired word of God and he made a commitment to believe and preach every word as if it was the truly inspired word of God. This caused his ministry to explode with thousands of people getting saved.
Why is this important? Because if you doubt that the Scriptures are inspired by God you will not preach them with authority but as suggestions and options to live a better life. Remember that from the beginning the devil came to twist the word of God and sowed the seeds of doubt into the minds of Adam and Eve undermining it’s authority. He said has God really said and he totally lied saying that if they ate the fruit of the forbidden tree of the knowledge of good and evil that they would not die when God said that they would. This spiritual conflict over the authority of the word of God continues until the present day. Ministers of the Gospel must preach the word of God with total conviction as the authority of God himself in order to cause men and women to be saved and become authentic born again disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.
WHAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE?
1) Don’t argue with people about the truth but be patient with them and trust God to do the convicting and convincing.
2) We are living in the last days and the sinfulness of humanity is great.
3) Only the holy Scriptures can make us wise for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.
4) The Bible declares itself to be inspired by God and we must believe this to be effective ambassadors for Jesus Christ.
5) We know that the word of God is inspired by God himself because it’s the only power to transform sinners and the saints!
