October 30 – Hebrews 1
God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

5 For to which of the angels did He ever say: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”? And again: “I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son”? 6 But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all the angels of God worship Him.” 7 And of the angels He says: “Who makes His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire.”

8 But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions.” 10 And: “You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. 11 They will perish, but You remain; and they will all grow old like a garment; 12 Like a cloak You will fold them up, and they will be changed. but You are the same, and Your years will not fail.” 13 But to which of the angels has He ever said “Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool”? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?

OKAY, HERE’S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY

Now we’ve come to one of my favorite books in the New Testament which is the book of Hebrews. Some Bible scholars believe that the book of Hebrews was written by the apostle Paul. This is the view that I also hold. The book of Hebrews was written to the Jews the original Hebrew people in order to explain to them the Messianic fulfillment of Jesus Christ and the greater glory of the new covenant that we have through faith in him. Although written to the Hebrews, it’s message is also for every Christian as well because it is the inspired word of God and we are able to grow in our relationship with God through it. More specifically, the book of Hebrews teaches the great necessity of having faith in God to advance and inherit the promises of God.

It also teaches us why Christ and the New Covenant is far superior to and supersedes both Moses and the Old Covenant. It is a book that is rich in Old and New Testament contrasts and contains the most detailed explanation of the Old Testament priesthood and temple with all of its furnishings and their unique meanings which were only a shadow of the realities that the blood of Jesus has now made available to us to experience through a new Covenant by faith. The pages of Hebrews teach us how to worship God by a “new and living way” a reality that Christ taught sincere worshipers would experience, a connection with God in Spirit and in truth.

In chapter eleven it covers the hallway of faith’s hero’s outlining many Old Testament believers and their outstanding examples of what it meant to have faith in God. The book concludes with several ultra-practical applications of the word of God in terms of our obedience and provides us with wisdom to embrace the discipline of our heavenly father brings into our lives as his spiritual sons and daughters in Christ.

Chapter one begins by declaring that God has not been silent. The communication that humanity enjoyed with God from the beginning was face-to-face when Adam and Eve walked with God in the Garden. That communication was lost because of sin. The Lord chose to communicate through prophets. What the prophets heard from God they spoke and wrote down. 2 Peter 1:21 says “for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”

Jesus Christ is superior to the Old Testament prophets. God promised that He would send a prophet in the last days that would be like Moses. The early church acknowledged Jesus Christ as fulfilling this promise. Ref; Deuteronomy 18, Acts 3:18-26 When Jesus took Peter, James and John with him up the mountain he was transfigured before them. The Bible says that a cloud overshadowed them and a voice came saying this is my beloved son hear him. Obviously this was the voice of God the father speaking audibly to confirm in the minds of the apostles that Jesus was in fact the Son of the living God sent from heaven. Ref; Matthew 17:1-5. Peter wrote of this experience as a confirmation to God’s prophetic plan. Ref; 2 Peter 1:16-18

Jesus Christ is seen as fulfilling three Old Testament types of:
  • Prophet…has in these last days spoken to us by His Son…
  • Priest…when He had by Himself purged our sins…
  • King…sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

Jesus Christ is also superior to the angels. He existed before them in eternity past with the Father as Co-Creator. Jesus received His name and position by virtue of being the Son of His father. God commanded all the angels to worship His Son at His birth. Ref; Luke 2:13-14 Christ has been given the position of sitting at God's right hand until all the enemies of God are put under his feet. Satan tried unsuccessfully to overthrow God and permanently lost his favor and position in Heaven. Ref; Isaiah 14:12-15. The true purpose of angels is to minister to those will be heirs of salvation.

WHAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE?

1) The book of Hebrews was most likely written by the apostle Paul.

2) It contrasts Christ with Moses and how the New Covenant is so much more superior than the Old Covenant.

3) Chapter one teaches us that God has always been speaking through the prophets but now in the last days he has spoken to humanity through his Son Jesus Christ.

4) Jesus Christ is seen as superior to all of the angels as the Son of God.

5) Angels are servants of God, worship the Son of God and are sent to minister to the people of God, the heirs of salvation.
