September 14 – Galatians 1:1-24
Paul, an apostle (not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised Him from the dead), 2 and all the brethren who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: 3 Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.
10 For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ. 11 But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ. 13 For you have heard of my former conduct in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it. 14 And I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries in my own nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers.
15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace, 16 to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately confer with flesh and blood, 17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; but I went to Arabia, and returned again to Damascus. 18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and remained with him fifteen days. 19 But I saw none of the other apostles except James, the Lord’s brother. 20 (Now concerning the things which I write to you, indeed, before God, I do not lie.) 21 Afterward I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia. 22 And I was unknown by face to the churches of Judea which were in Christ. 23 But they were hearing only, “He who formerly persecuted us now preaches the faith which he once tried to destroy.” 24 And they glorified God in me.
OKAY, HERE’S MY TEACHING COMMENTARY
The book of Galatians holds a special place in my heart because it is the first book of the Bible that someone taught me in a Bible study verse by verse expounding the meaning by a teacher named Bev Conklin. The gospel that Paul preached was a totally new message based on Jesus Christ being the Son of God who died on the cross to fulfill the prophetic plan of God to save and redeem humanity from sin and death. Jesus proved he was the promised Messiah after he rose from the dead. If you remember, Paul was personally called by the risen Christ to be his ambassador to the nations. The reason Paul was writing this letter to the Galatians was because it seemed that everywhere Paul preached he would lead people to the salvation that God has provided for by grace through faith in Christ and form them into new churches. However, there were those among the Jews that just could not accept this new message that Gentiles could be saved without also conforming to the Mosaic laws which morally is righteous but the problem is that we all sin and the law points that fact out and does not save us but rather condemns us.
These fanatical Jews followed Paul to try to convince new believers in Jesus that what Paul was preaching was not true and that if they wanted to be saved they would need to be properly initiated into the Jewish community by the ceremony of circumcision and would be required to keep all the laws of Moses. This is why Paul writes his letter, to defend the truth of the Gospel and the salvation we have by grace which frees us from both the condemnation of the Old Testament laws but also brings us to a place of being spiritual sons and daughters of God in Christ as new creatures with the ability to live in the Holy Spirit and not fulfill the lusts and evil ways of our flesh.
Many Bible Scholars refer to the book of Galatians as the Christian Charter of Liberty. Galatians is all about understanding the foundational truths of the Gospel Paul preached. In chapter one Paul provides us a look into his call and development as an apostle of Christ. He warns against those that preach another Gospel and pervert the true gospel of Christ. He actually says, let them be cursed two times to emphasis the seriousness of preaching the true gospel and the judgement of God on deceivers.
Paul’s covers his divine call to the ministry and revelation of the Gospel of Christ. In Galatians we get a deep understanding of the meaning of the grace of God to bring us salvation opposed to the law that brings the sure judgement of God. Here’s a brief overview of the book by chapter:
Chapter 1 Paul shares about his call from God and how the Gospel he preached came directly to him from Heaven. He shares how God revealed the gospel to him and that he did not learn it from man.
Chapter 2 Covers the confrontation of Peter and Paul over the issue of law vs. grace. Peters hypocrisy is rebuked by Paul because use ate with the Gentiles until some prominent Jewish leaders came to Antioch from Jerusalem. Paul also goes into how we can be justified through being identified with Christ in his death on the cross saying “I have been crucified with Christ”
Chapter 3 Teaches the curse of the law and the redemption we have in Jesus.
Chapter 4 The law produces slaves to fear and condemnation while the gospel produces liberated sons in the family of God with the Holy Spirit producing within them son-ship crying out Abba Father.
Chapter 5 Liberty as sons that produce the fruit of the Spirit contrasted to the works of the flesh.
Chapter 6 How to restore a believer that has fallen and the law of sowing and reaping.
WHAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE?
1) Galatians defines for us the meaning of grace in the salvation that we have through faith in Christ alone outside of any personal works, efforts or observance to the Mosaic law.
2) You’re in for a real treat as we go through the book of Galatians because you’re going to learn the difference between legalism and liberty in Christ.
3) As sons and daughters of God you’re in a relationship not a religionship with God.
4) Galatians teaches us that is born again Christians we are free from the condemnation of the law and now have the power of the Holy Spirit to produce spiritual fruit that glorifies God.
